I cannot be 100% sure that there was no play from new, but after 600 miles, my right side pin has play. This is a metal pin which goes through a plastic screen bar. The parts fiche shows a 'bearing' surrounding the pin but I believe that the 'flappines' of the screen is causing premature wear:

What is yours like, any play ?

Some of us on here have had the pins fall out. Theres a thread on here about it somewhere.

Found that the circlip securing that pin was missing when I washed the bike last week. Not impressive considering I picked the bike up new to me from the dealers only a few days before.

Lost my pin. Went in to dealers to get a new one to find out it was £15:eek Was going to replace with a bolt and a nylock nut, but then the very nice service manager said because they have lost the same on their demos, got it replaced under warranty:beerjug: It does need looking at by BMW as the circlip is shite!

I lost 2 pins in one week! kindly replaced by SBW Motorrad guys at no cost. Apparently they've seen some bikes loosing them regularly!

Both mine fell out within 2500 miles on my 2014. Dealer offered to replace but i fixed with nuts and bolts from B&Q as I figured why replace with same faulty design ?

Hi, 2500 miles on 2014 bike, no more play now than when it was totally new, I did previously lube the pins & plastic parts with chain spray grease
Checked yesterday the C clips are still in place.

I had thought about replacing pins with bolts, but couldn't find anything with correct size shoulder as the threaded part of the bolt will prematurely wear the plastic away.

The cir clip that holds the screen went missing from my bike, bmw dealer supplied one free of charge. I would also urge you to check for any stress marks around the clamp screws in the middle of the screen, they revised the screen for the 2014 models as the 2013 models were known to fracture. (as advised by dealer) However my 2014 has a new screen on order due to the stress marks around the two top torque screws. When it arrives I am going to make a rubber washer out of an old inner tube.

so much for a premium product?

1, leak rectified from starter motor (bmw known issue)
2, rusty collector box
3, replacement screen on order
4, replaced screen bolt and washer

Still have to be optimistic! was crapping my self that my final drive and fuel controller were going to fail on my previous 2008 bike.. which never did!

if the pin is held with a circlip , how does it get loose ? The circlip comes off the pin ?

My idea would be that the dealer 'forgets' to put them on.

The bike is delivered with the screen detached.

i.e. it is easy to put the pin in place but a pain to then put the circlip on.

just my guess

More likely a design flaw -a combination of perhaps too shallow a circlip groove combined with excesss movement caused by turbulence.

As for dealers forgetting to fit the circlips, maybe on one or two on initial build up but surely not on the replacement parts.

BMW wouldn't entertain multiple parts replacement unless it was a design fault.

The flaw in that assumption is that you do not necessarily need to add/ remove the pin to attach the screen. It depends what is attached to the screen at delivery . Two torx screws are all that hold the screen bars to the screen mechanism.iUndo these two screws and the entire screen clips downwards and off.

Well mine stayed in place for over 2000 miles from launch date, my mates 'disappeared' within days (both of them). He only noticed the clips missing when a pin was nearly dropping out.

When he had them replaced they have remained 'inplace' for over 4000 miles.

So unless the design flaw was recognized within days of launch (and I doubt it as they seem to still be 'getting lost') then I cannot think of another explanation.

And lost two more retainer clips this weekend! Well lost one for sure..and when I thought I lost second one...I found it on the beak...I thought...that lucky me so I could put it where it belongs...no chance...it fell apart in my hands! The bottom part from the C shape ( in thinnest place) broke loose so no chance of reusing this one...so I believe these clips are going missing because of metal fatigue in the thinnest place....I wonder if BMW is aware of this....will report it tomorrow when dropping my bike off for service...wonder what I'm going to get as a loaner, as RT 2014 I had last time is grounded....:(

I don't want to tempt fate, but mine have remained intact in over 14000 miles. :nenau I make sure that the gap in the C shape is at the bottom, and they haven't rotated round, so maybe this is the trick.:rob:augie

Yes you are correct. The little circlip is very weak and snaps in half. I lost one pin which was posted to me as a warranty claim. Checked the other pin which was in position but when i touched the circlip to check it was secure the circlip broke in half when touched.. rubbish.
