Can anyone help? Screen on Zumo, which is well out of warranty, has developed a very fine hairline crack on the left side, resulting in not being able to enter data using that side of the sreen. There is a thread on Zumo Forums that suggests replacing both the LCD screen as well as the touch screen digitizer. Garmin will not carry out the repair - they only suggest that I throw another £111 at them for a replacement reconditioned unit. The parts for the repair appear to be available from an EBay seller in Hong Kong.

Has anybody carried out this repair that might be able to lend a hand or offer some advice, helping hands etc. , or do you have any knowledge of anyone able to carry out said repair in the UK

Any advise will be greatfully received. Stevia.

I bought a replacement screen from China. I did not want to have to try to peel off the touch screen from the LCD so bought the lot, ready assembled.

It cost about £35.00 on eBay and was delivered very quickly. Opening the Zumo to fit it was very easy, once I had found a bit for the tiny torx screws. Removing the old screen was also straightforward although a few minutes with a magnifying glass was needed to find the microscopic clamp levers on the two ribbon connectors.

The new screen slid into place in the sheet metal housing from the old one and more time with a magnifying glass got the ribbons in place. The fiddly part was getting the water seal around the screen back on. It had stuck to the old screen and once removed it was hard to get it to stay in the small groove in the screen frame. I was not sure I ever did get it right as it can't be seen once the unit is assembled.

Everything back together and the good news was the Zumo powered up perfectly and the screen did not even need recalibrating. The bad news was about an hour later the entire Zumo died!!! To check if the screen was the problem the while job was reversed and the old screen refitted but the Zumo is completely dead and isn't even recognised by my computer.

Maybe the failure has nothing to do with the screen change but I am now back to square one with the need to spend £111 on an exchange plus the £35 spent on the screen.

Although the replacement cost from Garmin seemed a bit OTT I guess it would also have given me some sort of warranty. A while back Garmin exchanged my Zumo 660 for free although it was a little out of warranty. In retrospect it would have been worth paying for as not only did it cure the fault but it also provided me with a warranty and a pristine unit to replace the somewhat battle scarred original
