Screen Spoiler

As Grizzly says, try your bike without the screen. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Just simply stand up on the pegs and see (hear) what happens.
For me, that raging drumbulence inferno turned into a smooth even muffled hissing, as my Schuberth C3 intended from the beginning.

I considered a TT or Wlich lip on my high GS screen, then I saw what it would cost me. So I bought a Givi 330 from NN. Even with the postage it was cheaper...

The lower screen is now three notches raised, and the upper is just above middle. Standard seat in low position. And I'm sooo happy. (190 cm (~75 inches) tall, with 32" inseam on me Levi's)

Sometimes I regret not buying the winglets too, sometimes I don't. Something to do with different air density depending on :blagblah :nenau ?

Ok, I have decided to try out the TT spoiler option and see how that goes. Will update you all on how well it works for a 6' 4" 17 stone rider.......

Fitted the screen spoiler today and it does make a marked difference. Reduced buffeting and I can hear the ipod better as well as being able to ride at 80mph with the visor open.

Hoever, it does appear to have created more of a sail effect?? I will try again tomorrow to make sure this wasnt just the wind today.

I will also try no screen at all at the weekend and let you knwo how that goes.

6' 4" 32in inside lederhose leg.

6'2" here, seat on high, and the Givi 330 does me fine. Over the ton most of the way down the M40 yesterday in relative comfort, plus the ability to take off the top bit and change it to a near fly screen when the urge to hoon is overwhelming.

I tried Nippy's High and "you'll need a Dremel to fit" Wide, with tobinators before the switch - which was fine, but needed an Aerotrim to make it bearable on the motorway, and which sadly shattered the first time it got a bump.

I too have tried various screens on my original GS without too much success.I switched to a GSA and fitted a TT spoiler. Although this setup is good it is still not perfect. I believe that the issue is with the design of the GS/GSA. The screen is too far in front of the rider. I find that if I lean forward and get closer to the screen, I am getting closer to the screen and lowering my height. This gets rid. of the turbulence.

Dropping the screen to it's lowest setting also gets rid of the turbulence by moving youth head out of the dirty air. The down side is that your head. is subject to the full force of the wind.

I tried an RT at the time I bought the GSA. That was wonderful. So Mr BMW, take note, make the RT screen fit the GS!

My '09 GSA still has it's bog-standard screen.
It was built as a hybrid using an R1200S engine and gearbox, but also using standard GS front bodywork.

The seller supplied two brand-new winglets, but I haven't bothered installing them - I find the wind protection with the standard screen outstanding - all the way up to an indicated 225 Km/h.
Beyond 180 or so, all you need is a modest crouch to get your head lower behind the screen.

I do find that raking the screen back to two notches from the bottom of it's travel helps a great deal. I would have it even further back, but the mirrors start knocking the screen at full steering lock.

My vote is for minimal screen or none at all. Try taking it off see if you like it that way.

Pal of mine tried that on his last two bikes (1200 Bandit and Rockster). He claims that both have less wind blast with the admittedly small screen removed.

Hmm, I might have to have a go at that. I made my own deflector blade for my previous R100 using clear Perspex ( a number-plate blank I bought from our local motor factors) cut to fit the screen and mounted on triangular-ish blocks I cast using resin and hardener from a glass-fibre repair kit. It worked very well and raised the aerodynamic height of the screen by 8 or 10 inches and made a huge reduction in wind noise without interfering with my sight-line over the screen. The fun of making your own blade is in the wide range of shapes and angles you can try and then testing it in the summer when willow seeds and thistledown are drifting in the air: watch them approach and whizz up and over your head! Trouble is, that only happens for a few days a year. Look, I never said it would be quick did I.

I had the Touratech, but it made little difference for me, I got an MRA X-Creen and it's made a world of difference, but does take a little time to get setup just right.

There's no "clamp" directly in the field of view either, which I like.

+1 for the Touratech Clip on screen extension. Worked fine for me and found one second hand on ebay.

Ive just bought @veetwokay's Givi Airflow 330. It really is amazingly good and its great to have that adjustable slide to move down when off the motorway. I also dont think its "that" ugly. IMO its in keeping with the bike.

Im 5ft 8ins with a a standard GS seat on a GSA. The screen is set at the lowest on the BMW tilt adjuster and has Tobinators on the front also set at their lowest. The smaller Wunderlich brackets may be a neater option. HOwever a taller person would use less tilt at the main mounts and set the tobinators longer so the whole screen would sit higher on the bike.

Ive had the standard screen, replaced that with a slightly larger but similar style Wunderlich and I wont be going back to either. Also, the Wunderlich instruments cowl screen I bought for the summer may also be back on the market.

Yesterday I got caught in some VERY heavy rain. There was enough airflow to keep my visor clear but my jacket stayed dry. Unfortunately I wasnt wearing waterproof trouse, but that's hardly the screen's fault. :)

I suspect in the winter I will have visor misting problems (but it is a Schuberth C2) and I can now move the screen to get a better airflow. The other screens just let everything mist up and still created an annoying head banging turbulence.

Ugly?

Surely "ugly" doesn't matter with a GS; it's a brilliant motorcycle but it's not a pretty one. Function over form, that's what we're after I think.
