Considering fitting a taller screen to send airflow over my head (I'm 6ft). Is this a better idea than tobinators? Who makes the best screen?

Reduce your carbon footprint - wear smaller shoes

Theres loads of info on this if you do a search.
Ive got the ADV winglets and a Givi screen and its as good as it gets.
The ADV screen looks better than the Givi IMHO but the givi with the winglets is a good cost effective solution

Hi there, the only certain way is to remove the screen. :thumb

Everything else will reduce it, some ideas better than others, some more popular than others. All IMHO and YMMV.

add the touratech extension to the top of the adv screen and works good for me (5'10'')

I spoke to a GSer from South Queensferry who said according to the ADVrider site the GIVI screen and the winglets are the way ahead.

I happen to have the GIVI screen so fitted the winglets and they do make a suprising difference.

I tried a tobinator but no difference at all.

I am 6 foot 1 but taller in the body and suffer what I called tapping on the back of my helmet. It is quite irritating. My vision also blurs above about 90 (not ideal)

If I duck about 3 inches all seems quiet and peaceful.

I have yet to discover the secret...

Givi screen, no winglets no probs. 6', seat in low position and screen on 4th slot. This position also blows rain off visor.

Bigger isn't always better in my own experience. I've fitted a boxer design carbon screen to my 1100 and its much better than the taller standard screen. :thumb2

Givi screen and NN winglets worked for me, I am 5'10" and I can comfortably see over the top of the screen but still have much better protection fom rain and lower buffeting :thumb2

It`s one of the things that spoil an otherwise great bike imo. I`ve tried Tobinators, a Laminar lip, cut down standard screen (although I`m going to cut another inch or so more for the warm weather ;) ) The current set up is an MRA screen used with Tobinators so I can get the height using the oe adjustment & the rake using the Tobs. It would be brill if there was somewhere with all the options & you could spend some time trying them all out!

I'm 190cm (6'4? I quess?) with a long torso and have tried numerous setups. Now I'm using Givi, Tobinators and LaminarLip, just ordered the Nippynormans winglets, hope they'll improve the setup. My current setup could be better on the noise side and also has disadvantage of looking like a bit like a barn door. Also when "off-roading" I'd need the screen to be easily removed.

I've been thinking of giving the TT Desierto III a try, even though it is horribly expensive. At ADVrider someone made a taller screen for the Desierto and would quess I'd have to do it also if I go that way. Don't know how difficult it is to remove the Desierto upper screen, but it would be nice to be able just to take the screen off when needed.

its a pain to put on the initial fittings but the screen can be removed in 3 mins with a spanner

im 6ft 4 and there is a bit of buffeting over 85 in high winds but ive never bothered adjusting since first fit and they make bike look good

I'm running the NN's high and wide screen. I'm 6ft 2in and can ride up to around 70mph with visor up - provided it isn't raining - which it never does in Wales of course ;-) Good value to in my opinion

When one does find a 'barn door' ;) that leaves you in a pool of still air do you not tend to find that rain does not clear from the visor and that it mists up much more easily/won't clear as easily. :nenau That's certainly been my experiance :nenau Also, I'm guessing hot sunny days aren't as cool in the bonce department.

Some more banter on screen sizes here.

There may not be a holy grail but there are directions in which to go. Formula One teams spend millions on sophisticated wind tunnels to redirect air a millimetre at a time. Since no two riders are the same height, ride with the same helmet or with their windscreen at the same angle you can be certain that what works well for someone else may not do it for you.

Like most GSers I found the stock 1200 screen making undue turbulence. Style over function for sure. Experience indicates that bigger 'barn doors' cause their own problems and that generally, if you can get your helmet in clean airflow, then that's a good thing. The first thing I did was take an R1200RT for a demo ride to play with the windscreen height. Once I had the cleanest airflow I left the screen in that position and took good note of the top of it relative to the chin bar on my helmet. Next step was to call Mr. Sportouring in Wales to order a Cee Baileys screen in a height that would correspond to what the lesson on the RT showed me. In my case it was 3 inches taller than stock and I also opted for 3 inches wider to direct air away from my shoulders. So far so good. With the new windscreen in the most reclined position I immediately got a much cleaner, and quieter, airflow.

Part 2. The bigger the barn door the greater the low-pressure area behind the screen. The Cee Baileys screen made for cleaner airflow over the shoulders and helmet but I could feel more of a low-pressure zone and the turbulence spilling over the top of the screen and from the sides across my chest. Back to the catalogues for a Touratech 044-0550 dash cover from Nippy Norman. In front of that I made a hole in the screen that roughly echoes a Honda SP-2 intake snout. Voila! Low-pressure area filled and clean air everywhere. The only real noise remaining is produced at the vents on the top of the Arai helmet. Arais are quality but noisy.

Any 'holy grail' has to account for the cleanest possible air flow rather than just simple redirection. The 'flip' at the top of the standard screen can only create turbulence. Your issue is solvable but the ultimate solution will be unique to you.

Cheers,

Mike

Nope, with only a slight movement of my head the visor is cleared. It doesnt get that smeggy in the first place mind. Yes misting can be more of a problem, but you can always alter the angle for winter and raise it for summer.
