Gentlemen (and ladies no doubt)

Have purchased my 1200 after 7 happy years of 1150 ownership. The only thing I need to change so far is the screen.......or modify it. I am 6'6" for reference, had a look at the options and the easiest and cheapest appears to be the touratech clamp on job that fits onto the top of the existing screen.

Anyone of a similar stamp tried this or other options......some of which look horrendous!!!

I am 6' 2" and the best mod I made to my GS was to fit a GSA screen. Buffeting gone, a lot quieter and I can drive at illegal speeds with visor open.

It is an expensive solution at £300 but apart from the fact that its a solution which works it means the bike is still 100% BMW, it looks pretty good and the additional top brace means it does not shake about like the original. Fitting is simply a case of unbolting the old screen and bolting on the new kit. If you add the winglets though you need to drill some holes in the beak. I stuck some masking tape on the beak and marked the hole positions from measurements taken from a GSA in the showroom. The winglets feel a bit flimsy when fitted but have been there for six months and don't move at all in use but whether they make any real difference, I am not sure.

I looked at other, cheaper, solutions but decided that it was better to spend the money on a proper fix rather than, as others have done, try a variety of unsuccessful aftermarket solutions and have a garage stacked with useless plastic.

One I looked at was the Touratech extension but was worried about the extra strain on the screen and the big lump of aluminium in my line of sight. Finally noted that Touratech state that and extra screen brace is needed to use it and thought the cost to make the bike look crap was becoming excessive.

One plus with the GSA screen is the top brace provides a convenient place to bolt on satnav. etc. although I found my Garmin 2720 on Touratech's add-on mounting bar looked quite smart but shook about too much. Lighter kit may be OK though.

PS

Recently fitted the black GSA beak extension which does bugger all but, together with the screen adds to the GSA look. I would not pay full price but there are loads of new genuine BMW ones on eBay at silly prices. I paid £20 inc delivery. Fitting takes about 20 seconds.

GS Screens

I have just done a 2000 mile trip on a GSA over 4 days with a Tourtech screen extender clamped on. Although I am not quite as tall as you I am used to riding a Pan European with a large screen so my reference point of acceptable wind noise is probably lower. I was surprised how effective the screen extender is. I can ride with the visor up well into 3 figures, (only on the continent of course)
Crossing the Alps was then just a matter of unclipping the extender and dropping the scren down. Should you go down this route then I understand you need to upgrade the screen fixing points, Nippy Normans can help you on this, its a very quick job.
If you decide to go down the full larger screen route the try http://www.ceebaileys.com/cycle/index.html who I used for the Pan screen. VERY VERY good quality products and well worth the hassle of having them sent from the US.

Just a point on the posting from Max. His Touratech extender is on a GSA screen which has the high level brace and is a lot more stable than a GS screen.

Ceebaileys solution may be a good compromise and save about £100 but they are currently quoting five weeks delivery. My dealer had all the GSA bits in stock.

Higher screen

Like North etc. I have had the GSA screen fitted for many months now and I agree with all that has been said; It is a BMW part and thus fits properly. The rather bizarre shape prevents the bars and wing mirrors fouling the screen on full lock; I notice that 'North' has also fitted the Adventure beak as I have - buy the genuine BMW part which is cheaper than others.

Yes - repeating earlier post - genuine BMW beaks on ebay including the required longer screws and spacers can be got for less than £20.

Watch out for some of the sellers knocking them out for a buy it now price of double that.

Noted.....

The GSA screen is definitely an option. The GSA screen and touratech add on would be a very pricey option.........although I cant deny it would probably work.

The other option suggested, cant see the name whilst I'm typing this...will have a look at the site.

If any other options are out there am still open to ideas or hear from anyone who is my size and has had good or bad experiences.

I fear the GSA one may eventually be the one.

Thanks for the input chaps. Dont want to get this wrong!!!!

I just went for the auctioned ones with max bid of £20. Lost the first two but got the third for £16.00 plus P&P

There are so many for sale its pointless bidding over the top. It's like buses - there will be another one along in a minute.

Can you list all the parts needed to do this mod (bolts, braces, etc) ? i can look up the part numbers myself just need to know the parts to order

Thanks Rich

Did mine nearly a year back and just went into dealer and looked at cutaway view on computer but will try from memory and looking at the bike.

Obviously you need the new screen, winglets and upper brace bar (that's the most expensive bit.

The two adjusting screws are the same (my dealer thought they were longer but they are not) but you need new plastic bushes where the adjusting screws fit through the screen. These are two part and click together through the screen hole.

Two extra screws and plastic bushes for the top brace and use the existing ones for the `hinged' bottom front fitting. Don't overtighten these, the dealer warned that it is easy to crack the screen.

For the winglets you need, for each, the two mounting screws with plastic bushes and nuts. The nuts were not clear on the drawing and used two of the `captive' nuts used in other areas. These are flat U clips with nuts on them that are used in other areas and provide a wider base than just using normal nuts.

Once assembled I did find it was a bit of a sod to adjust as the extra brace meant it was hard to undo the adjusting screws enough to allow the screen to move freely. I solved this by cutting a couple of bits of a small screw a few mm long and putting them inside the dome nuts on the end of the adjusting screws. This allowed the dome nuts to lock on the screw earlier, so the screws could undo a few mm more when adjusting the screen.

Assembling it all is easy but two people helps to hold bits in place while screws are fitted.

Hope this helps. I was the first at my dealer to try it and I know they kept a record of the bits needed for future use. As this seems a popular mod I guess most dealers would know exactly what's needed by now.

The GSA adjusting screws are longer than the GS ones to take care of this.
(I could send you ALL the partnumbers etc; if you wish - but not tonight as it's past my bedtime.)

My screws were ordered from the part no. on the GSA draing and the screws supplied had the correct number. Same length as the ones already fitted.

Scren adjusting screws

I have just measured the standard (now discarded) screws and the threaded part is 40mm long I cannot easily measure the GSA screws now fitted but they are at least 50mm I would think. and they CAN be loosened off to adjust the screen with the domed lock nuts fitted and left locked.(Part n° in France is 46 637 694 397)

I'm thinking of trying a different screen as I've put up with the buffeting for too long now - it's bearable in everyday local use but on three recent 700mile round trips it has started to get to me and spoil my enjoyment of the bike and the trip.
Looking at the Wunderlich Ergo as a cheaper alternative to a GSA screen, I notice that on some pictures (Rainbow's site) it has a really crappy-looking pair of meccano support struts, yet on other photos it doesn't. Are these really part of the kit?

The "Meccano struts" were only used in the very early models of the screen and have been replaced by a much thicker screen. By all accounts a it's very good screen and one I'll be putting my pennies to when I've got a few more saved up.
Goodness knows why they don't drop the old photo's and replace them with the new model  , it certainly almost put me off, until I found they had since changed the design (3 years ago)!:nenau
