I'm just getting the 32 litre PD tank ready for respraying and have found that the internal gauze fuel filters on the two petrol taps are covered in wet flakes of red/brown paint. - red lead?
The two fuel lines have fuel filters in them as well so I guess there is little chance of the flakes getting to the carbs?
Do I need to clean the tank out somehow and is it necessary to re-seal the tank inner surface with something?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Many thanks
Ray

on my classics I use Petseal. Drop a handlefull of nuts and bolts into the tank with a pint of petrol or parrafin. Shake for about five minutes and pour it out. Do it again, and again, and again, untill the petrol comes out fairly clean. Let the vapout fizz off outside and apply the petseal as per the instructions. Leave it in yer airin cupbourd overnight,,, voila.
It'll cure small leaks as well, good stuff.

Millard - the one with the Servicar and Nortons?:thumb

I've used Petseal, a white flexible aircraft type sealer, and POR-15 (On a Landrover tank . . . never again, couldn't move my arms for about a week after the length of time it took sloshing the tank about before it all cured :blast)

They've all done exactly what they claim to perfectly well with nothing much to choose between them - the key (literally!) is in the preparation and getting it absolutely dry and free of fuel, oil, loose rust etc.

Motorcycle tanks are easier, strap them to your wife/girlfriends back & when you're on the vinegar strokes, call her by a different name....:aidan

yup, but you have me at a disadvantage Graham, where have we met? online, offline, on the road? in the boozer? under a hedge?
Hopefully I've got nothing to admit to being toooo embarassed about in public?

The Sevicar's gone but the Nortons are still here, although somewhat neglected since I sold the Road King and discovered the joys of BMWing

don't use the whole can of the stuff, only about half for a 3 gallon ish size tank.

or try the rodeo f*kc,,, mount your dearly beloved from behind after strapping the tank to her nether regions securely. Then adopt the rodeo rider position, ie her hair in one hand and the other arm in the air, then proceed to tell her that she's not as good in bed as her sister/mother/best friend/dog. You must then attempt to stay mounted for 8 seconds.

Occasionally of RealClassic some time back - you gave me some help over Norton oil tanks.

GS too now eh?! It seems to come to us all eventually. My Norton is getting just as much use as ever (although has just celebrated the coming of winter by lunching its big end :( ), but the Triumph has hardly left the shed since I've had the Beemer. (Pssst, anyone want to buy a 650 Triumph? ;))

Ah right :beerjug: haven't been on that site for a long time, very cliquey. Someone on another site calls it "God's waiting room" can't think why :augie
