Over the last couple of days when searching through google i am getting all sorts of advertising and being redirected from the site I want to look at to other sponsored sites.

clicksor.com validation keeps appearing requesting I click on a word to validate redirection, I have never clicked on it for fear of running some sort of program that will cause me all sorts of problems.

I changed IP to BT a couple of weeks ago and the pc is now covered by McAfee anti virus. Previously was with Virgin and never had this problem.

I tried a system restore to last week when everything was okay.

Sorry but I haven't got a clue how these things work so any help greatly appreciated.

Idiots guides welcome!

Clicksor Categorized as:
Adware
Software that is designed to launch advertisements, frequently pop-up ads, on a user’s computer and/or to redirect search results to promotional Web sites. Adware programs are often built into freeware or shareware programs, where the adware creates an indirect ‘charge’ for using the free program. Sometimes a trojan can silently download an adware program from a Web site and install it onto a user’s machine.

Hacker tools, or Browser Hijackers, can also download an adware program by exploiting a web browser’s vulnerability. Browser Hijackers may tamper with the browser settings, redirect incorrect or incomplete URLs to unwanted Web sites, or change the default home page. They can also re-direct a user’s searches to “pay-to-view” (often pornographic) Web sites.

Typically, many adware programs do not leave any marks of their presence in the system: they are not listed on Start | Programs; they add no icons to the system tray; and they don’t show up on the task list. In addition, adware programs seldom provide an uninstallation procedure, and attempts at manually removing them frequently result in failure of the original carrier program.

I suggest you run a scan with malwarebytes .

you can get malwarebytes here,
this is a direct download link
so you should have no trouble getting it.
click on this link ↓ and then select run.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/affiliates/2…
INSTALL IT TO YOUR DESKTOP, update it,
then run a full scan and remove everything it finds.

some viruses will try to disable it
so if malwarebytes will not start up
then go into the folder it is in and rename the mbam file to XXX
then double click on the file you just renamed to start it up.

after you have used malwarebytes
Scrap Crapafee and install AVG free or AVAST free

Both tons better than Crapafee

All depends on your ability to tinker

I look after a machine for a friend with free virus protection who found this on his laptop. I loaded McAfee and removed it.

Have a look at the options on your McAfee menus or try online help.

McAfee is a good product. With revenues of $2BN in 2009/10, Intel liked them so much they paid $7.68BN for McAfee last year. But what do they know ?

McAfee is not a good product, its terrible as was responsible for disabling thousands of XP machines last year because it saw part of the OS as a virus! http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/mcafee-update--shutting-down-xp-machines/ its slow and resource hungry and you even have to pay for it. I recommend Microsoft security essentials at the moment which is free but there are several other free AV programs that do a good job as well.

Sounds like you have a browser hijacker on your machine. I had a same thing happen a while back. All searches were redirected to lists of products and services. Both Firefox and Explorer were affected, My Trend Micro anti virus programme updates were blocked, I couldn't even log on to Trend Micro HouseCall. In the end I resorted to wiping my hard drive and re-installing MS Windows to cure it.
Hope you can find another way of killing this virus.

Try and follow this link and see if you can run HouseCall http://uk.trendmicro.com/uk/products/personal/free-tools-and-services/ It is a free web based scan for your computer run by Trend Micro who are one of the main anti virus software companys. When you run HouseCall there is no hard sell or other pressure to buy from them.

Hope you get this sorted without having to resort to a reinstall.

I had the same thing 2 weeks ago - found out I had several trojans that had got through Avast, Microsoft security essentials and Anti-Malwarebytes. To clear mine I had to buy Kaspersky - but it seems to have done the job.

HTH.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

I ran a full scan and it came cack saying 4 virus and a trojan had been removed, seems to be running okay at the moment.

Thanks for all the links:beerjug:

Don't be so sure. My lappie has had the same problem as yours for the last couple of weeks. I have no idea what site I have visited to cause the problem as I use my old lappie for porn etc. When I click on a google link I get taken to e bay or some other site. I have used Malwarebytes and virus scans, both of which have found and cleared problems. I also booted in safe mode in order to delete a dodgy looking app from the window/temp/... directory that was 'in use' and therefore could not be deleted in normal operation. I thought all was now OK but this morning google took to ebay again when clicking on a link for the Vic Reeves exhibitoin in Folkstone

Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/pure-trial-register will be my next route as this cleared a problem on my older lappie that other products couldn't.

Post up your fix if you find one as I have the same issue. I will let you know how I clear the problem (if I do). :thumb

Kaspersky pure (30 day evaluation copy) has fixed the problem :thumb2 . This is the second time Kaspersky has cleared problems that others could not fix, I may even buy it (£49.95 - ouch) as my complimentary protection supplied by Virgin, my ISP, is clearly not up to the job.

Note - if you install Kaspersky, diasable/close your other virus guard otherwise it causes conflicts
