…I have a question.

Would seasoned car hire experts please advise me on the following requirements.

Wife and I will be flying to Cagliari on The 4th of October for a week and will need to hire a car.

Last time I have hired a car internationally was 8 years ago in Florida, so being hardly an experienced hirer.

As it is always the case, you select the car you wish to be driving for the duration of your stay, but upon arrival to the hire firm desk, you are given something that is completely different, as it was the case in Florida.
Now Sardinian roads and streets are known to be tight and quite narrow, so based on that I do not want a huge vehicle that I will struggle to park, get around the bend safely (without having the front end taken off by an oncoming bus/truck, etc).

Ideally I’d like to get something the size of a Golf or Tiguan. Yes I am a bit of badge snob, I do like my VAG products. Anything bigger, might not be clever really.
I really dislike anything overly plasticky and looking like toddlers toy. Example being a Citroën C3 etc, Nisan Juke etc. I don’t mind a Fiat 500, but it be way too cramped for me, not least as these vehicles have hardly any luggage space.

I am tempted to stick with know names in this business, such as Avis, Budget, Europcar, Sixt, Enterprise.
Cagliari airport has many local companies, who are cheaper, but chances are their cars will be a few years old, covered in scrapes and dings. To simply put it, I am not interested, thank you. Unless of-cause some of you travelers, have had nothing but excellent service and state of the car was excellent and as expected.

Question is, how do I bag a bargain? Is there a secret to this?
I have a Costco membership, so can hire a car through them. Wife suggesting that we hire a Fiat Panda from Avis (or whatever is being offered as an alternative. Cost for a week, £142.00. I do fear, that I will hate driving Panda.

At home I get to drive a VW Polo and my daily driver is a VW Transporter. So an upgrade from Polo would be nice, I hardly wish for a downgrade.

The alternative is a Seat Arona (basically a jacked up Seat Ibiza) that cost £167.00 for a week. The bonus, it being an Automatic. If such an option is available, then I certainly do not want to spend any amount of time shifting gears, when on holiday. The above mentioned Panda, has a manual transition.

So, is there a way to get a better deal from these two companies?
How to blag a free upgrade?
Have you traveled to Cagliari Airport and hired a car from Avis or Budget?
How was your experience?
Were you forced into buying additional insurance?
(Minimum insurance provided in the price is Third Party Cover) Whois this be sufficient, or would you recommend taking out upgraded policy at the time of vehicle hire? Our budget is maximum £200 for a week and for an ideal car. However my personal preference, Is to pay a bit less if possible.

I know the regulars will soon be along to take mickey and by all means feel free. I’ll just skip along said posts that are less than useful.

Thank you.

I think you will just be served whatever they have on the lot to be fair :D

Just get the class right and be prepared to get a big 500 (L or similar, there is two variants).

Last time I flew and rented a car in Italy (wedding near Venice) I got a recent Punto that was surprisingly good for what it needed to do: drive to wedding venue, drive to restaurant, drunk drive from restaurant to b&b, return to airport day after.

Lancia
Ferrari
Ferarri, they can keep it.
Delta Integralle…. Nice car…

Hardly Italian! Romanian Marque, produced from Renault parts bin leftovers (or at least used to be not very long ago at all. Not bad cars to be honest, our very own Arsey has one (or at least had one, unless that’s gone now too)

I think you might be right, 500L/600L, Fiat Bravo, Alfa would be nice 😃

Just do not want a fecking shoe box with steering wheel and a manual stick.

Do like the locals do and ride a goat!
(You can also use it go to locations as an extra)

You can arrange CDW insurance at home either for a single trip or year usually much cheaper than the hire company. But usually if you do this the company takes 500-1000 euro off your card until you return the car without extra marks. Take loads of pics of any existing damage on the car before leaving the hire park and make sure you show them to a rep and get their name. Winds them up a bit but better to be safe. I've used europcar for years without issues and Alamo in the States. The above sounds like overkill but a friend is currently battling to get his deposit back from a French hire company. But has date stamped photos of the pre existing damage. However he didn't put it under the nose of the company rep and get them to acknowledge the damage.

Zest car rental.
The best there is, IMO.

Aren’t they just another car rental search engine (representing every rental company there is) instead of the actual rental company?

They are a broker but there's no fucking about with them.
Excellent prices and everything is clear on what you are paying for. Take out their damage waiver and you can forget about being charged for any damage.
I've used them for years and never had any drama.

Thank you.

Something like this will do just fine, me thinks.

Any bigger vehicle, and I don’t think it will be practical.

I always sort by cheapest as it's only ever me and the missus.

The two above are the cheapest in that class, in a small family (Ford focus) it is mere £7 difference over the larger motor.

Badge snob, you get what you're given maytey, and be thankfull your going to get butt f*cked, with all the extras , and levies they will add on post hire, so the cheapest rent a wreck will be the better option

I hear ladas are a good bet

That doesn't happen with Zest.
You just respond no to every additional charge offered at the hire shop.
I've kerbed wheels and had a broken brake light when returning the car. They never checked as I had the waiver and was guaranteed the return of my deposit.

Having been to Sardinia many times and rented cars many times. Get the smaller car. You aren't carrying surfboards?. The roads are tight, parking is at a premium in summer for beaches. Smaller = parking closer. You cannot really go over 40 miles an hour unless on big dual carriageways or motorways (f which there is about 1..). The roads are twisty and tight. Bigger cars = easier to smash a wing mirror. Like riding a GS in a 20 zone...no point
