And todays issue is...

The Seat Lock! I'm in one of those frustrating phases of lots of little niggly things all cropping up one after another - in all fairness probably due to my lack of time to give the bike proper attention. :nenau

Anyway, The seat release lock is well and truly jammed/fecked. It's not the usual crudding up of the underseat release itself, that at least is clean and well lubed.

I noticed the other day when I went to take the seat off (only a day or two after I'd previously removed it, hence why I know the release was operating ok) that the little red dirt/dust flappy thing in the lock that is pushed aside when you insert the key was half missing.

Now, whether it's somehow become brittle and snapped off, or whether there had been some "foul play" involved when it was parked up at work I don't know. So now, the key won't fully insert (maybe a bit of that red plastic is lodged in there somewhere) and wont turn, so I can't remove the seat. I've poked and prodded with a tiny screwdriver but cant see anything in there.

Anyone managed to get the seat off without using the lock, and without knackering the seat/catch in the process? Any tips for sourcing a new lock? If I have to go down the horrifically expensive OEM route can the new lock be keyed to my exisitng set or will I have to have a second key for the seat or a complete new lock set?

Thanks.

I had the same problem when my cable snapped.

Also if you show you V5 when getting your new lock I think they will do you a keyed alike lock. I think the rear seat lock is expensive and comes to about £48 with one key!! Hopefully I'm wrong.

I've tried to show where you need to poke the screwdriver and where you need to contact. It was actually quite easy.

As an alternative I could do you a fuel cap and rear seat lock which both use the same keys and 2 keys supplied also for £30 if you are interested as I had to get a new ignition lock set which came with the above included.

Top man, thanks for a very helpful answer! :thumb2

Unfortunately I've not got the bike with me at work today so I can't try it out, but it looks from your pics pretty much as as simple as pushing the catch from the exhaust side.

Thanks for the offer of cap and lock – I'll speak to BMW re a cost for a new lock and see what they come up with first then get back to you on that.

Mind you, for £48 I might just carry a screwdriver that I can pop the seat off with! :augie

As long as you don't store that screwdriver under the seat you'll be fine.
:D

Heheheh very true!

So, quick update: I've taken the plunge and gone for a new lock from BMW. I was tempted that way primarily because it comes with 2 spare keys which, now I've given them my VIN number, should be keyed alike to the existing set. Not cheap though...ouch!

Thanks for the offer of your cap and lock though mhsnowy, much appreciated.

And as another quick update to my update:

I'm STILL waiting for the new lock from BMW, 10 days or so later :blast

Going over to Normandy for a few days for the D-Day 70th Anniversary next week so have "jury-rigged" a seat release to see me over that short trip.

Just a short length of very thin bungee cord like you get on a back pack (in fact that's probably where it came from) tied around wher the cable attached to the release and fed underneath and out the rear right hand side. Can't see it with the luggage on so doesn't worry me having it like that for a few days. :thumb
