Hi, bought my gs last January 2018. After a few months noticed that the rider seat started to split. Anyone else had that problem too?
Bmw was not very keen on replacing that but after 4 months they agreed to replace that.

Boot scrape; next !
No is not. BMW reviewed the case and said that is due to heat :) I was not aware that I cannot use the bike in soo hot sunny weather in UK. Middle of the seat has already small marks that will spli soon as well. And also after visiting bmw at Dorchester noticed that their demo bikes has similar things in the middle of the seat. They are only few months old :/

It's definitely not due to heat because I had my Rally seat (on a ADV) twice to mexico going through death valley where it was 129 degree Fahrenheit on that day and after 13000 miles it shows no wear...must be a boot scrape or a jealous Afreeka-Twin or 1290 owner fooking with you...;)

looks like a fag burn to me ..so well done in getting BMW to cough up a new seat. i think this is where loyal to a dealer can pay off

It does look like fag burn however second split I noticed after leaving my bike in my garden in the sun. There wasn't any africa or ducati fan nearby :). Definitely faulty seat material.

Is there a remote chance that the curved parts of the windscreen may work as a magnifying glass or reflector when the sun hits a certain angle and make hotspots on the seat?

This happened to a friend of mine that had a scooter with a large curved windscreen. It totally ruined his plastic instrument cluster.

This is what I was thinking, A couple of Versys 1000 owners have had the same issue on the instrument cluster.
I'd have thought the seat was too far away from the screen though?

You are probably right. It was just a longshot on my behalf.

On my friends scooter the problem occurred when the sun came in from behind, and the curved glass reflected the light onto the dashboard. It happened while he was driving and it warmed up so fast I could see the smoke when I rode behind him. It was really absurd...

I have Puig Touring screen installed on my gs so it is high screeb. Could be that the sun melted the seat through the screen.

When looking at the picture the cut appears to be warmed up. Next to the larger cut there is also a shaded area. This bears all the signs of some how being warmed up. Kudos to BMW for replacing your seat, and I feel confident that your dealer has taken part in the debate and spoken up for you. This makes the difference between a good dealer and a not so good one...:beerjug:

Could it be a lazer burn. Does it happen parked in the same place.
