Wifey is coming round to the idea that i need a second bike for the summer. The guys i go riding with have their winter hacks so we can all do a bit of wild weather stuff and green laning. Come summer however there is no point me going out as they pull out the fazers and R1's. Any recomendations as to what i should be looking for. Only stipulation is i hate being crouched over a tank with drop bars.

Why not a 650GS and pick some bumpy B roads
Fazers, CBR 600, 1200 bandit...............101 different bikes out there but I'd just pick smaller roads and whoop em

It'll hold its own on real roads with the Jap fours and does the touring bit well, too

My cousin has a FZ1 fazer, and when i had a go it was quite an upright riding position for that sort of thing. Not my kind of bike though.
Or you could chop in the 650 and go for a standard 1200 gs and have the best of both worlds.

Great fun! you can pick up a decent one for about 2k, depends on your budget really. Not uncomfortable, i'm a fat bastid and the riding position is very similar to a VTR1000. cHEAP TO INSURE TOO, 120 QUID, FULLY COMP.
Give it a try!!!! Mines got some load cans and a seat hump, it's great fun and rides like a dream! gets SORN in the winter and a few blats in the summer.

if it was me; first place I'd look is a Honda hornet. I prefer the latest model, but for a couple of grand there's plenty older models about. Same engines as in the cbr.
the last model was available in 600 or 900cc & the new one is 600cc or 1000cc although offcially the 1000cc isn't called a hornet.
I test rode a new one last summer & loved it; noticably lower riding position but not supersports territory. Very smooth 4 cylinder & plenty of twist & go!
Unfortunately I couldn't afford a new hornet & keep the GS. & the GS ticked all the boxes for me.
so later on in the tear I have to work out whether to keep the GS & get a older hornet or whether the the 800GS do everything I want in one bike...
There no better way to decide than wait for some dry roads & get some test rides arranged!
