I think it's fair to say that Edinburgh has become a hotbed of motorcycle theft. Recently, two German couples who were touring on sidecar outfits, experienced attempted thefts of their machines when they were parked in a secluded hotel car park. That led them to leave the city where they'd planned to spend a few days and go to Newcastle.
There's been considerable discussion on social media about the problem and although some of the young joy riding culprits have been identified, little has been done to curtail their activities. It's clear that there's also a more organised element who are stealing bikes for financial gain.
In response, Saltire Motorcycles in Edinburgh's Gorgie Road are offering secure parking in their recently enlarged premises for touring motorcyclists. Calum Murray, the man behind Saltire discussed this with me saying that he was happy to pay £10 a night for secure parking when he recently toured Morocco and would like to offer the same in Edinburgh.
