security camera without internet

How much data do you need?

Who knows? Get a monthly data SIM and find out when you hit the limit.

A quick search suggests that Budget Mobiel (https://www.budgetthuis.nl/) has an unlimited data plan from €20 so don't spend more than that but there are probably better deals to be had out there.

I would personally start much lower and find out where you hit the limits as this will give you a good 'real world' example of your actual needs. Sure, it will be inefficient for the first month or two, but it's really the only way to know how much you really need.

No point paying long term for more than you need.

with streaming video we run PAYG and it's usually 25Gb of data and we run the sim till it craps out, then swap out but we have 4 sims in rotation split over the different networks and 2 as eurosims which we pay for via a preloaded revolut card

but there's loads of different directions of travel

25-50GB would be my 'guesstimate' requirement but it all depends on how much you dip in to the system.

From experience you'll be doing it constantly for the first month, but by month 12 you'll really only check after a burglary or other 'significant event'

I have a PTZ cam which I spent the first 3 months constantly monitoring and moving about but which has neither been panned, tilted or zoomed in more than 3 years now...

This looks perfect! I guess once i sign up to a plan i obviously dont need a phone number but i guess i just plug in the sim car to a 4G/5G router and then go?
Any idea of makes of routers before I overspend?

Have a look at the Scancom site for data only sims. I got one 150gb a month for 2 years for 60quid

Nope. It’s a communal source for all the garages under the apartment block and I pay a nominal fee in my service charge but no separate meter or the likes.
Basically a router should be around €250 and then a couple of wired ring cameras should do the trick. I have Ring cameras already at home and like what they deliver so it looks good.
Might even see if I can order a couple in UK if the price is cheaper

I need something that has limited storage but something I can simply click on the app and see what's going on. Ideal would be something like the Ring cameras which I also have. They turn on if triggered by motion and you can set how long they record for OR you can simply tap the app to start the recording or look at the camera view. Not too worried about the costs of the camera but I don't want a sim card bill that's 100´s a month....
Regarding the camera options we've had some good experience with Eufy. We're using their Floodlight Camera E340 + HomeBase S380 to remotely monitor a door. They're both mains powered and offers all sorts of detection/alerting with an option for constant recording, and the HomeBase S380 takes a standard hdd or ssd for local storage. The camera is OK for external mounting and can also be set to scan within a defined limit horizontally/vertically. There's no ongoing subscription although they do offer a cost-based cloud backup in case of the local storage being damaged/nicked. The local storage is the only thing that needs a network connection as the camera and storage talk via a private network. The camera also has decent night vision without the floodlight being on so doesn't annoy the neighbours. The app isn't too clunky once you work out what options you want to enable/disable.

I'm considering buying some more for a couple of other locations.

250 yoyos for a router seems a bit steep. Just seen a Dlink 4G one on Ebay for 12 quid

Remote cameras will activate using a PIR, so you are not constantly streaming, but the camera is only actively recording when something is moving.

I have been using an Arlo Go with a 4G connection in the lock up where I keep the bikes for the last 6ish years.
Works fine. Data cost is a fiver a month.

I can connect to the camera and check, if something happens it starts recording and alerts me on my mobile and uploads the video to the server.

I wouldn't advise Arlo to other people anymore (their software/app management is shit, their tech support is even worse) but there are so many similar alternatives on the market.

Data usage, over the years I doubt I went over a few tens of Megabytes per month.
These cameras do come with pre-activated SIM. When my ended, last year, I replaced it with a Lebara (the 5er a month mentioned above) as other suggested in this thread.

Get a single device. You do not want to start messing/troubleshooting both camera and router and their connections.

Yes it is but its not accessible by cable as its across a public street and is built under a block of flats so absolutely no chance of getting a cable run there. The 4G option is the only one but i need advice on a quality camera which has this. I have seen some cheapy ones for about £100 but I’d prefer a quality one say from Hikvision or Eufy….must have a power cable option
Be careful with 4G wifi , when we were having issues with BT we went with a sim only deal with O2 for wifi , bought a router and all was tickety boo for a month or so , then they updated the local masts to 5G and we lost our 4G internet signal
If ypu have a decent 5G signal then a sim only wifi deal , router and camera would work but at a cost

Have a look at broadbandbuyer in the UK.
They have a good range and offer excellent advice and also excellent support.

There seems to be a good range of routers that cover both 4g and 5G but I’d suggest calling them

I use Tapo cameras- tilt/pan/swivel is £20 on Amazon, the app is pretty good as you can set it to patrol if you want, also adjust the motion sensor sensitivity so it’s not triggered by moths and insects. Stores to sd card and if you buy a subscription for £20 odd quid a year it will send alerts an store to cloud.

Not a hikvision expert and their newer kit may be different, but if the NVR is in your house then the garage camera may have to be on the same network? If that is the case then the 4G solution wouldn't work, you'll need to find a way to get your home internet connection to the garage.

If you have line of sight then these may be an option.

Any idea of makes of routers before I overspend?
Well, it's very subjective!

The two key things I would suggest you look for are the CAT and the option of external antennas.

The higher the CAT number of the router the faster the speeds it can achieve are. There's a description here but I would personally suggest that while a CAT4 will do the job, the extra money to get a CAT12 will probably be worth it.

External antennas may or may not be needed, but if your router doesn't have the option then.... I would get one that has the option and see how you get on without as you can always add antennas later.

Brands?
Very personal - but I won't go near brands like Huawei with their questionable security history.
I've had good experience with the Netgear Nighthawk M1 which can be picked up second hand for reasonable money. They're really easy to setup and use (as are all the Netgear routers).
I'm currently using a Teltonika, but I think the cost would be greater than you really need to spend for your use case, although they are excellent!
GL.iNet have great reviews consistently - I've never used one but they'd be on the evaluation list for me.
The ZTE MF286D also seems to be popular and is a lot of router for the money. Might even be the one I would recommend.
