ANYBODY FITTED A TRACKER (so police can recover it if stolen) TO THEIR BIKE? how much? pros / cons ? ...........many thanks

Look here for some info. It is not cheap but it is effective. I heard a nice police man saying that when someone calls in a stolen bike/car/whatever all they can do is hope one of their patrols spots it by luck, but when someone calls in a Tracked vehicle they get straight on it because they know they WILL find it along with the scum that nicked it and probably a garage full of other stolen kit. Arrest guaranteed :thumb

Tracker is okay but reliant on the owner informing the police and or tracker that it is stolen to have it activated. Prior to this it is inactive and will not show up as stolen. I am not saying which force I work for but very few of our vehicles now carry the tracker devices so it is reliant on on our helicopter being up and about. For example if your bike is stolen overnight and you do not realise it until 8 hours later how far could it have gone or been stripped.
A better idea is track back which is a system that automatically detects unauthorised movement ( i.e when you do not deactivate the device before moving the vehicle.) The unit then informs a monitoring centre which tracks the unit via satellite and gives the police a running commentary as to its location. I've seen this in action with a local authority artic which activated and units were guided in to its exact mobile location in a rural area with speeds directions etc (turns out it was being recovered overnight after a breakdown )
All of the above have problems with bulk of the unit and the ease of thieves finding it on a bike
A new system is coming on the market very soon which will combine all of the above in a unit no larger than a match box and is being developed by a company local to me. It was apparently originally developed for military applications to prevent the loss of rather expensive toys.
I'll see if I can find their web site and post it here

I have Tracker Monitor on my car....it has been partially used once. Some knobhead rear ended us in a traffic jam and the car was in the garage for repair (it was driven there). When the garage returned the car, they lifted it onto a flatbed recovery vehicle to deliver it.....within 2 minutes of them lifting the car, I had a call from Tracker(it has a movement sensor). I was well impressed with this, but I'm really pissed off and annoyed to read the above post, because the system is utterly useless if the police don't have the required equipment to track a vehicle if it is stolen.

Re my previous the company is called Action Point Tracking ,the hardware etc has been developed and the company is about to launch it onto the market. the web site isn't up and running as yet but they can be contacted on 01665 606071 and Mark will explain the system and set up.

Tracker on a mtorcycle is pretty pointless for two reasons.

It cannot be easily secreted on an bike - ergo easily found and removed.

The possibility of a bike being broken up following removal from the owner is almost guaranteed, so the largest component will only be found.

Regarding the latter of course it may lead the (sic) forces to the miscreants.

Look for Police vehicles with an approx 400 mm square plate and 4 aerials on top of the roof. There are quite a few around.

Not sure how big the unit is so I can't comment on how easy it would be to hide on a bike, but if it were to work as advertised, then the vehicle would be recovered and hopefully, scum apprehended, long before they had time to take it to bits. If the police have the right gear and you have Tracker Monitor, not the ordinary flavour.
My neighbour had his car back within 24hrs of it being stolen, and scumbag thief was indeed arrested.(Probably got 2 weeks community service)

It obviously can work on a car, so in theory it should work on a bike.

Sim card tracking

As a smaller alternative, what about a sim card tracker?

It's a small battery powered box that has a mobile phone sim card in it. You can then track the location (to within 50 metres) via the internet, or your smartphone etc?

Perhaps this is not ideal, but as Tracker is too bulky to hide on a bike, it could be a viable alternative.?
