Sedan hotel - Le St Michel near the castle

we stayed our last night in Sedan at http://www.le-saint-michel.fr/en/ - next door to the castle in an unloved part of the city centre. It had decent reviews so we took a punt. It has a free public car park next door as stated on the website but the bonus was an enclosed courtyard at the rear for bikes at no charge. It was a Logis and some of the branding colours remain. We had a few beers in the nearby town centre and Bar Gambetta is good with a decent range of local beers (some from Belgium nearby). We took a punt on the hotel restaurant which had a 3 course menu from 21 euros with dearer options. House wine 10 euros for half a litre was drinkable. For a Wednesday evening, the restaurant was doing a good trade with locals.
The immediate area is very run down with several boarded up bars etc. This hotel is one of those charming French affairs run by a very friendly chap. He claimed not to speak English but was very patient with my Franglais.

Yeah but it costs another £30 FFS 🤦‍♂️
And why stay somewhere nice different and a bit memorable on your bike trip when you can stay in a small non-descript hotel surrounded by squalor and boarded up bars ? It’s what true bike trips are made of 😜

I wouldn’t stay there again - even when you can park your bike on the very top of the ramparts outside your room.

The castle
-Expensive in my view. All image and no substance.
-Superior rooms were not that superior.
-Restaurant food nothing special (for France) and also expensive.
-Poor bar
-Understaffed. Sat outside in the sunshine, couldn’t get drinks because the receptionist/barman/admin person was run ragged.
-Not actually supposed to park in the courtyard (but bikes do)

One of the reasons we liked the St Michel is that it suits those folk in my group that have some mobility restrictions. It's a steep walk to the castle. From the St Michel it is a flat, 200m walk into the main town centre for bars etc.
I had already heard about the food and bar service difficulties in the Chateau. The restaurant at St Michel is always busy often with many Chateau residents due to good food at good prices and reliable service.
Last weekend we were a group of 36 there for 2 nights. Based on my previous visit, I was confident they could deliver a three course meal to this group over those two nights. Breakfast also good. Unusual for this oft repeated bank holiday weekend since the first in the late 90s, there were no difficulties with food or service.
Pragmatism outweighs getting a pretty picture of a hotel for social media for some travellers.
