Seeking accomodation in Chefchaoun.

Myself and the Petit Pillion will be paying a quick visit to Morocco in a few weeks tme. Looking for somewhere nice to stay for a couple of nights in Chefchaoun. can any one recommend a hotel or guest house?

Have heard the horror usual stories about morocco from lots of people who have never been there, what is the hassle factor like in Chefchaoun?

I was in chaouen 3 nights ago, will post name of place i stayed when i have my journal nearby. hassle was a lot less than i was led to believe, only thing to bear in mind is if anyone suggests you want to smoke, give a firm no, unless you want to buy of course. the area;s main economy is pot so you will be approached a number of times to buy, a simple no will not cause any offence, it,s only business to them. don;t let that put you off though, the road from chefchouen to fes over the rif is stunning with view after view on the mountain passes.

Can recommend a place a few miles further south just south of Ouezzane Motel Rif well signed from the town on the road to Mekenes.

Chaouen accommodation.

Was there just over a week back. Though I stayed at a friend's house, opposite is Hotel Madrid, with a guardian operated car park right outside. (actually a piece of waste ground / going rate is 10DH per night.) Looks a pretty reasonable place catering for the odd tour bus. My out of date Rough Guide describes it as "tastefully decorated, and with a fine panoramic rooftop breakfast terrace". It's right on the edge of the Medina. Uncertain whether there is a bar?

If alcohol is a priority, there's the Hotel Parador....... but it and the drinks are a bit pricey.

Stayed in the Hotel Madrid in Chefchaouen in 2006, thought it was ok and a guy will watch over the bikes all night. We found a sort of speakeasy down the street from the Madrid selling (cold) bottled beer.. I'm sure the hoel staff will know where it is.

I stayed a Hotel Madrid a couple of nights ago (325 dh with b'fast). It was OK and the breakfast was a 'stuff-yourself-as-much-as-you-like-buffet', but there must be better places in the town. I arrived without plans and just took the nearest waypointed hotel from MarocTopo.

For a much better route through the Rif than the main N2/N8 roads, take the R419 south from Bab Taza to Ourtzarh. No hassle, very little traffic, beautiful scenery and better-maintained roads.

Hank, I can highly recommend Hotel Parador which is located further up the street from the Hotel Madrid at the top of the hill (GPS Ref N35 10.131 W5 15.641)

We have stayed there on two occasions now. It has parking and is only yards away from the towns street market which is a must in the evening

The hassle factor in Chefchaoun is almost none existent, yes you may get asked if you would like a little 'smoke' with your pizza but they don't take offense if you decline.

Chefchaoun is one of Lucy's favorite places whenever we visit Morocco

Stayed in the Parador for 2 nights recently & it's certainly handy for parking & the old part of town but we found the staff surly I'd stay again though

As Paul says it's a cool town & surprisingly hassle-free, given that it's in the Rif.

The Parador is up the far end & there's a grand wee cafe ( just behind where I was stood taking the pic) which supplied us with copious amounts of tea, coffee & fresh orange juice during our stay

Wish I was back there now

Pretty sure the speak easy Jaws mentions is a male only bar, doubt if they would actually stop the two of you going in but could, depending on your attitudes, make your stay a bit uncomfortable.

Bar in the Parador is open to non residents and an offer of a beer for the waiter and/or barman usually ensures prompt service at local rather than tourist rates

If you see any clothing or trinkets you like in the souk don't buy them there, head south west a 100km or so to Ouezzane where you'll find the same stuff locally made at about 1/4th of the price. And a stunning ride as well, top day out from the blue town

For future reference there is a great campsite at the top of the hill way above the medina, in amongst trees so good shelter from the heat. I think we paid 90dh in january. Complete peace and quiet from any hassle, and a great restaurant. Best food we ate all week. Also has internet for guests to use.

Yep, agreed, and right across from the campsite is a higer-end hotel. Can't remember the name, sorry, but it's very good quality and if you're not worried about the buzz in the town, it has the advantage of fantastic views. To find it simply follow the signs for the campsite and start climbing.

Of course, if you do choose the campsite, the hotel's still a top place to visit for a beer...
