My rear subrack is badly rusted and needs to come off for blasting and painting. I have the rear shock, wheel, tank etc all off but I can't for the life of me get the front engine mount stud out.
I have tried soaking it in kroil, bashing it with a lump hammer and I had the bright idea of adding spacers under a nut and tightening to pull it out which just stripped the threads.
Any advice please. There must be an easier way...

Weld a nut on it and try undoing it while it's still hot from the weld.

Whats the likelihood of doing engine damage if I get a bigger hammer?

If you can lay the bike over as far as possible you might be able to get some PlusGas or similar loosening fluid to soak down around the bolt. I would be inclined to give it a couple of days with regular doses of fluid before going at it with the bigger hammer.

Heat would be good but unfortunately the wiring appears to be too close in the picture.

Thanks, I'll give this a try

I’ve seen anchors in better shape.....

I went at it with a bigger hammer anyway and got it 3/4 of the way out.
All I can say regarding that decision is that I should have waited. I feel like puking every time I think about what has happened and will be driving the car for foreseeable future.

You can get bits alloy welded? I take it you broke a bit off the casing ? Sorry to hear that if it was indeed what happened?

If you can Whatsapp photos to Aidan or someone and onto me I can have a look and see if I know any fixes??

I know how you feel I was pressing the remains of an engine bolt out of my R100RS engine and the cheap press deformed under pressure and skidded off and hit the Oil filter housing Which basically made the engine scrap without extreme expense So I parked it and am working on new ideas I would like to put it back into service but without breaking the bank

Take 5! Step back! and have a look at the options

The £12 to sub to the forums to post pictures and send and receive messages is well worth it

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Yes I broke the casing, but even worse than that. My drift wasn't long enough to keep the stud moving so in a moment of madness I grabbed a long old screwdriver with the handle taken off to finish the job.
I didn't realise the diameter of the engine mount hole was that much larger than the stud that the screwdriver would be able to get between the engine and stud.
The 4lb hammer had enough force behind it to drive the stud up though the top and (I assume) the screwdriver down into the clutch area. Both screwdriver and stud are wedged in there now. It cant think of anyway the engine is coming out now short of using an angle grinder and even then I can't think of how I can get the "drift" and stud out now that they are wedged together in order to get the welding done.
I can't believe such a stupid moment of rushed stupidity has led me to this. I only wanted to paint the bloody subrack.

What part of Ireland are you in? If you can’t get it sorted, I might be able to take a spin over to you and see if I can help. I won’t be able to help with the broken casing but might be able to help getting the bolt and screwdriver out.

Cheers Tadgh I'm in Cork.
I have a buddy who has access to a machine shop. He is making up an attachment with an m12 thread for my slide hammer and and m10 thread for the stud. I'll rethread the stud with a die and hope for the best. Hopefully he'll have it made up by tomorrow.

Help always welcome, you're in Galway though by the looks of things.

It sounds like your friend with the machine shop will be able to get you sorted, hopefully.

I am in Galway but work in Cork fairly regularly so wouldn’t mind calling to you if you needed help.

Well give me a shout next time you're down, even if I have it sorted by then it's nice to show the progress to another GS owner and make a contact
