Selling advice

Hello all

I'm thinking of selling my bike from home. This is the first time I've done this in years and years as I would nearly always be tempted by the simplicity of a trade-in. The world seemed a simpler, more trusting place the last time I did this. I'm wondering about the approach I should take re "test" runs, forms of payment etc? All advice gratefully accepted.

No test rides without fully payment and proof of insurance, set out the terms of the test ride. If they bin it they've just bought it.
Cash only, provided you know what a forgery looks like and lodge it to the bank immediately. If accepting a draft hold on to the bike until it clears.
Don't accept their car as deposit for the test ride, it may be stolen.
Be careful who you invite around your house and what you let them see.

No test rides full stop.
If they want to test a BMW they can do it at a dealer.

if I can give my 2 cents worth? Tread carefully but be friendly and open with people. If u have a nearly new rt or such like of course u will not give test rides but the other side of the coin is how do exept someone to buy your pride and joy without testing it? I have bought and sold many items on this site and I have never had any negative trades. If you look at someones profile on this site that will tell u a lot. put what u have to sell out there with a fair and honest description and your price and see what happens. Finally if someone is going to ride your bike to test it you must make sure that they are insured and liscenced to do so. Good luck with the sale.JJH

+1 I'd say be sensible, just sold my 650GS, guy took it for a test ride but left his missus and car as guarantee You get a good feeling from people, he was a good un and was happy to let him take a spin.

Would agree with cash only though and maybe deliver to his house just in case you need a comeback on dodgy money or something...

Errrrr.......... no . If, and I hasten to add it's still a big 'if', I decide to sell, it will unfortunately be to get out of bikes for a while (save for the trusty Honda Cub) and get into......... I can hardly bring myself to say it........ a caravan or a campervan. . Just seems a better option for family holidays than the KTM. I did try bungeeing the toddler to the tank but, inexplicably, this seemed to raise some health and safety concerns with the wife .
