Sequentially renumbering large numbers of .jpg files

I'm missing something really obvious here I guess and it's a minor irritation but.......

I've got a folder with 500ish .jpgs in that I want to rename ;

1.jpg
2.jpg
3.jpg
4.jpg

etc etc......easy huh??

So I select all of them and rename the first as 1.jpg......and it renames them all;

1.jpg
1(2).jpg
1(3).jpg
1(4).jpg etc etc :blast

As I said, it's only minor but does anyone know an easy way around it please ? :)

Not tried it myself but apparently Irfanview (free) will batch rename - have a look here

:blast I knew there was something I was missing....I've even batch modded these pics with Irfanview already...just didn't think to try it for renaming as well :blush
