Seriously hot Remus!

you can buy ali foil skinned flexible asbestos mat - used for heat shielding race car components - from Demon tweeks.

This can be bonded in place - say the outside of the panniers - and if done properley will shield all the heat you'll ever produce.

Bond it in place with heat resistant flexible silicone - or fire gum silicon - dark red coloured.

Lower Pipe

I have a Staintune pipe made in Oz with a lowering bracket - see pic (I hope!). They do sell the bracket separately - see www.staintune.com. The pipe was pricey but I can't remember how much the bracket was on its own. If I was going again, I'd try the Remus with the low bracket. I then ordered the larger left pannier which has the aluminium foil thingy underneath the pipe. If you go down this option, you may be able to avoid the cut out in the pannier and carry even more stuff you don't need (like I do!).

A bracket is probably cheaper than a few scorched items in teh panniers!

Cheers,

Psyko.

Hmmm...interesting stuff.....

Para..that photo.....yours is obviously mounted on the same bracket on the pillion footrest but the gap inbetween the inside edge of the zorst and the wheel is much less than on mine.....this would imply yours is pivoted more around that point, and perhaps that means the end of the y piece where it pokes out of the near side of the bike is longer.....

I'll have to have a look tommorrow.....

Psyko...thanks for those shots too...I'll have to put the panniers back on or look at some of my shots to see if that bracket will lower the can enough to fit it under Vern's boxes.

:)

Bill,

I'm a bit confused by what you want to do. If, as you say, you're going to leave the panniers on effectively full-time, then get a pipe mod done. Doesn't need to be as inelegant or permanent as mine - Touratech Zega Bags come with a bolt on one, for instance.

You are exactly right in your analysis of the cause of the problem. It isn't radiant heat that's causing the damage - so no amount of padding - no matter what it's made of - is going to make much difference - it's the exhaust efflux. The heat was enough to warp the 4mm (?) aluminium on my left pannier. You need to duct that gas away - a pipe is the logical way to do that. My solution is definitely from the 'function over form' school (like I care :P) - but, with more time, it might be possible to come up with a more elegant, removeable/replaceable solution...

It's Fanum who has the problem

I still think that is it very important to position everything as it should be - Remus exhausts are very thin skinned and the casing gets very hot - in fact I have seen Remus exhausts with blue "heat stains" - they should not touch anything - particularly the panniers.
It is also quite common on Oilheads for the exhaust gasses to partly hit the number plate - this never causes any harm

V sunny here this week

Hope you are well

Cheers

Bill (:D)

I'm aware of how hot Remus exhausts get, but it's a red herring for the damage Bill (:D) has suffered. My damage was incurred with a standard can & Y piece...

Bill (:D) - have you considered welding an extension tube on your standard can, then fitting that can when you've got the bags on, and the Remus when you haven't - not a huge operation to swap them over...

Mike:)
