I have been told by someone but I cannot remember who that the tank on the Dakar fits the Sertao but with it not having the vapour filter you then have a 17 liter capacity. Does anyone know if this is true?

I know the seats are interchangeable. It looks like the rear subframe and rear cubby are the same. Have a look on realoem and see if the major components are listed the same for both bikes.

Problem?

Unless you're travelling to far flung places devoid of petrol stations, surely the standard (14 litre?) tank is sufficient? I'd easily get 70mpg when my F was standard and I thought the G was supposed to be better.

I've now got an 11 litre Elkamet tank fitted, combined with a 15T sprocket, unifilter and straight through titanium exhaust, I still get 130 ish miles on a fill without pushing it to empty.

Stick with the oem tank and take a couple of litres in carriers of your choice if you need the extra capacity for big trips. Cheaper than changing the tank and plastics etc. :thumb2

Just looking for a big bigger fuel range and a saving on the dry weight

Dry weight irrelevant :nenau

A bigger fuel range/bigger tank by necessity meaning greater weight :nenau

Girlfriend and myself (both nudgin 60) rode through Russia, Siberia, Mongolia, Gobi Desert, returned through China and ALL the Stans, six month trip, on two 650GS's, with standard tanks :nenau

Not once run out of fuel :nenau

Where the feckin' 'ell ya heading for :nenau

Weight will be less if minus the filter if you don't brim the tank when going on the trails and the extra range is for my convenience. I never mentioned long trips as I have found the standard range OK when on a longer trip. My commute however men's filling up very frequently in the very early morning or late at night. Would like to be able to do two trips per tank.

Fair do's. :thumb2 No knowledge of this filter which I guess isn't on the F, can it not just be removed? If I didn't already have the rally tank I'd happily do a swap with you. :D

Well you got plenty of advise on why you don't want a bigger fuel tank, but then this is UKGSer:D

I'll be looking into trying to fit one soon and yes it seems like it may be a straight swop, I'll report back when I've tried it:thumb

From research so far the early g650 tank is 17 litres and a straight fit. The carbon filter appears to be on the outside of the tank in a recess. I think I saw that red Bike up for sale recently. The specs were very impressive. Along the lines of where I want to be eventually.

Ange's Sertao is getting a tad over 80mpg, filled up today as the fuel light came on at 200 miles and still had over 2 1/2 litres left ie. a further 42 miles,
So range to empty is currently 240 miles

I have a Dakar tank which I'm considering fitting which should give her an extra 45 miles approx.

This means having a 650 single with a range of 245 miles before her fuel light comes on and then having the extra 40+ miles before running out is pretty good in my book AND without the need for auxiliary tanks :beerjug:

Fair play, that bike looks the absolute mutts nuts

Any updates on this? I have a spare Dakar tank and I'm wondering what's involved in retrofitting it into the sertao. Thanks!

I've dun mine and its a straight swap sir
Here's a pic of the newer tank with the stupid carbon filter 3ltr space
also another with a old dakar tank in place - you could keep the silencer if yer wanted.
Or you could mail the bloke in USA that makes a 5ltr ally tank for only 600 dollar plus shipping :D I can do about 250 mile between filups but you may have smaller gallons than us over here
HTHY :thumby:

Thanks Mick. I think you answered me over on ADVrider too. Your bike looks good. I'll pop pictures of mine up when the swap is done. I bought my dakar tank off eBay for $32
