How much can one expect to pay for a 12,000 mile and 12 month service on a 2013 air cooled RT 1200 at a BMW dealer?
I have had a quote and the bike is booked in but just wondered if prices vary as it is expensive!
Also I have started by 5th 1ltr bottle of engine oil at just under 12,000 miles is that normal? The dealer says it is.

They probably want £450 ... They will probably want to change the brake fluid for £90 etc... And a litre every 3000 miles isn't excessive....

My 2011 RT is a 4 stroke so doesn't use any oil between services (circa 4k pa).:popcorn

Take it to Steptoe aka The GS Shop.
It will be half the price of a main dealer with a free loan bike.
He is in Kingston Vale on the SW side of London.

Just back from a 2100 miles jaunt down to Provence. Engine used about a third of a litre of 15w-50 Synthetic Dealer Liquid Gold. Riding style was giving it some welly on mainly N Roads on the way down and Auto Route all the way back. 12,000 mile service carried out by BMW Dealer for £370 earlier this year.
As a rough guide you can expect to pay the following (depanding on your postcode) to service a Twincam RT.
6000 miles including brake fluid change £295, 12000 miles £370, 18,000 £250, 24,000 miles £450.

Mine used to use a sight glass full every 1000 miles running on the 10w/40 that the dealer put in it. I changed it onto 15/50 or 20/50 and it uses hardly any now.

Bought a high is mileage twin cam, it uses a bit of oil. More than my previous Moto Guzzi Norge. But still acceptable. So far, the Norge wins for reliability!

BMW specs that they can use up to 1 liter per 1000 miles and still be considered OK. A few bikes come close, most don't, and the oil use usually tapers off at around 20,000 miles.

Jim

Is it possible for the home mechanic to service these beasts. I'm fond of the simplicity of the airheads but would like to use one of these for a while of it meant I could do my own servicing on it too. £400 for a service is just ridiculous unless major parts involved.

Have you considered twisting the tiger's tail?

Rev it hard on a few trips. If you do not hit the rev limiter you are not doing so.
It will soon bed in and stop using oil.
I changed the oil in my 1200rt last year in November before parking it for the winter.
I have not checked it since, and it has been round Europe this year.
When I change it again in the coming week, there will be pretty close to 4 litres in the sump. (Based on previous experience)
