By having the routine servicing done by an independent, does this invalidate the warranty on my 2010 GSA?

My previous bike, a 660 Tenere, could be serviced independently but all warranty work had to be completed by a Yamaha approved dealer. Is this the same for BMW?
 
I am not an expert but I had this conversation with Ducati. It seems that motorcycles are not covered under the EU legislation that was developed for Car servicing i.e. following the manufacturers schedule and using OEM parts etc. Motorcycles are considered 'luxury good' and are exempt.
The standard EU warranty requirements are 2 years for cars Under Directive MVBER(EC)1400/2002 and MVBER(EC)461/2010. Any extended warranty ie Kia and Hyundai 5 & 7 year warrany's are dealt with slightly differently. However, if you do not have a dealer service history it may make goodwill gestures a thing of the past. Additionally certain car manufacturers like Audi will not take a part exchange Audi in without a dealer history.
So it would seem we have been seen off again. I was told that this was being looked into by the EU bods and as they move at glacial pace I would expect your 6000mile service may be due before a landmark ruling from Brussells emerges.

As long as they are a VATable independant you are ok. All my services are done by Scrimmingers now, I had warranty work done by Astles, so same as Yamaha.
 
This is a touchy subject. All I will say is that my 2005 GS has the extended warranty. I carry out the majority of the servicing myself, those items that I do not have the equipment to do or the will are carried out by my local dealer. All service components except oils are purchased from my local dealer, who gave me the service schedule that they work to and so do I. I have had no problems getting any warranty work done by my local dealer. I am sure there will be people on here who will say that I have invalidated my warranty. My dealer and BMW are happy with what I am doing and I am happy with BMW.
It does pay to have a good working relationship with your dealer and BMW.

i'm 99% certain that the terms of the extended warranty stipulate franchised dealer servicing.

i think you have a very accommodating bmw dealer.
 
A key factor in my friendly dealer approaching BMW for a goodwill gesture on a £1300 ABS pump for my four year and eleven month old out of warranty bike was a full BMW history. I doubt that I'd have saved £1300 by using an independent and then having the request to BMW declined.

And then there's the additional issue of residual values. I'm pretty sure that service books with lots of BMW stamps have higher resale value. On a personally level, I'd not touch a bike that wasn't dealer serviced, but then again, I draw a blank after changing oil, plugs and discs/pads.
 
its the chance that you take - if your bmw motorcycle is out of the standard two year warranty and you do not have a bmw dealer history i doubt whether bmw would ever consider a goodwill claim outwith said warranty - if however your bike is still under the bmw two year warranty i don't think bmw can refuse a warranty claim on the basis it was serviced by an independant - rudiemoto on this forum runs adventurebike warehouse

- i am certain that he has serviced bmw bikes within the two year warranty and if he discovers a warranty issue then he takes your bike to the local bmw dealer who then does the bmw warranty work :thumb
 
Owners handbook for a 1200GSA says-

You can get it serviced anywhere as long as BMW parts are used and you get a detailed invoice. The warranty will then still stand.
I would think you should stick to the recommended service intervals as well.

And that is exactly what I do. Use genuine BMW parts, bought from my BMW dealer, serviced every 6000 miles I.A.W the BMW schedule. THe Bits that I don't do, my dealer does and the Dealer stamps my Service Book, which accompanied with reciepts for purchases give a complete and comprehensive service history.

Of the three warranty's available

New bike 2 year BMW you can get serviced anywhere so long as BMW parts are used. Warranty work will be done at a BMW franchise. No doubt any good will stuff after the 2 years will not happen.

Extended BMW warranty states that all work must be carried out at a BMW franchise.

Extended warranty such as warranty direct, all servicing can be carried out by any workshop so long as they are VAT registered. Warranty repairs can also be carried out at any workshop again so long as it is VAT registered. I assume your chosen workshop will have to agree to the warranty companies terms before they would be authorised to do any work.

Its all in the owners handbook or policy documents.

Not every dealer will do this and don't mention who it is because I don't think BMW will like that idea unless your a qualified mechanic. Daft I know but when you think about it it makes sense.
