Hi All, well after nursing the servo pump for two years on my 52,000 52 Plate GSA the warning lights are staying on more often than not. The self-check is OK but in heavy town use the rear fades and then I get the usual ABS on one circuit warning – so I am thinking about either;

  1. Installing a new pump so I can keep my ABS or
  2. Removing the pump
I am going to contact Steptoe as if I go for option 2 as I am not too comfortable about doing that myself but would like to talk to someone (or a few) who has done this – I have heard mixed reviews about servo removal and would like to be sure.

If you’re happy to speak to me could you drop me a PM and I will call you at a time to suit you.

Thanks

Gary

Straighforward, leaves you with normal working brakes ( NOT the residual brakes you have when the servo stops), but you lose the ABS.

The servo units contain two flat discs with holes in them (to alow fluid to flow through) that run against each other and spin depending how hard you apply the brakes - you only need microscopic wear between the two discs and bobs your uncle.

Reeee-moveit!

Did it last month. Used the no cost option using abs relay as inverter for brake switches and was really easy. Threads on here somewhere. The brakes are imho better without the servo, better feel and seemingly batter stopping power and they work with the engine off! pm me if i can be of any help. Cheers. ;-)

Also

Been having nightmares since reading that even though the rear light bulb is working, changing the bulb may have fixed my problem. If that was the case then theres a chance my servo is ok. If you wanted to do a swap first to try it that can be arranged. But to be sure what ABS system is it? an 02 bike may not be the same as '03 standard GS.

Out of curiosity, my bike is a 2002 R1150R with servo/abs which cannot be switched off.

Does the no-cost abs removal procedure work with my bike if I have to do it in the future?

Steptoe removed the servo/ABS from my R1150RS this summer and I am very pleased with the result, it just works...brakes are progressive, powerful and most importantly, reliable. I do not miss the ABS or the grabbing at low speed either.
S knows what he's doing, let him do it.

Thanks mark - that looks like my option - I was worried the breaking might be like the residual... but Neil has confirmed it is not, reports so far seem positive – I am after reliability which is lacking a bit at the moment.

Not sure but I know mine is not the later (more reliable?) version of servo / pump / abs configuration

Hi, I am wanting to remove my servo, off an 03 GS
I am not confident doing this myself and I am looking for someone who could do this for me.
Can you pass on details of Steptoe ?
I am in the Manchester area but can travel ( on resididual brakes ! )
Thanks

He's got it in his profile:

Telephone: 0208 546 2600
Email: [email protected]
Address: The GS Shop
5 Vale Crescent
London
SW15 3PJ

Be aware though.....he works really odd hours, starting at around 4am in the summer when it's cool, so he can be off riding his Harley in his leather chaps and plimsoles, so make sure you either phone him before 8 AM or after 11pm so he can fit you in the next day :beerjug:

If he asks you to clarify what model bike it is, you have to tell him "It's a red one"....That's the official code to get your 20% UKGSer discount......I was sceptical of using it at first, but my, how he laughed!!

Go for it

Steptoe did my bumble bee servo removal about a month ago - its fine, much better low speed control now.

Bill..., you're a wicked, wicked man :green gri

Do not do it that way.........................

There's a much cleaner way with no cutting of any wires, so electrics left as they are if someone wants to replace the system in the future.

That sounds even better still, I must try and get hold of that method from somewhere!
Thanks for the heads up :D
