Hiya,
05 1200,servos,abs,62k.

On my way to Scotland today got as far as Sandbach services on M6,whilst on m6 I had the red brake failure warning flashing, the brakes were working as normal so I carried on to the services to check the bike over.

When I stopped the rear servo was constantly whineing without operating the brake lever,( checked all the brake light switches, bulbs etc),the only way to stop it was turn the ignition off.

I had the same thing whilst running around town a couple of times in the past week, it was cured by turning ignition on and off.

Anyway I took the tank off to get access to the pump etc, turned ignition on and the servo is whineing away, took out the 2 small plugs and it continued, pulled out the main plug into abs pump and put it back in and the servo stopped whineing, the front servo has stopped working now as well though.

So I am left with residual braking so decide to ride back home to South Wales and the speedo has stopped working as well!

I have searched the forums and it all points to the abs pump going tits up,although nobody mentioned the syptom with the speedo.

Im pissed right off as this would have been the only oppertunity I had to have a big ride this year and the weather in Jockland looked proper.:tears

I have looked for some pointers to removing the abs and loads for the 1150 but can't find anything for the 1200?
Any thoughts from the GS MASSIVE?:nenau

Short or break in speed sensor wire, or speed sensor belly up. Would check for these faults first before scavenging the servos.

take a good look for a wireing problem and i hope you get lucky.
if it comes down to the servo set up and you want to remove it there is no problem repipeing it,
you then are faced with the wireing problem and there are a couple of ways around this.
1, black tape over red triangle,
2, de-soilder led bulb inside clock setup,
3, remove clocks completly and use a gps
4, some where around here there was wireing instructions to by-pass servo,
choices, choices, choices what is one to do?

Have a look at where the wiring from the ABS pump to where it routes near the right frame strut (One from the headstock to engine).
This area is where the fault usually lies. Peel off the harness tape & thoroughly inspect the wiring especially the 2 white wires which have a black tracer on one & a brown on the other.
You'll be looking for any kind of copper coloured spots where the wiring's rubbed through.
Other than that check for sticking switches etc. Might be worth getting it plugged in to see what fault codes you've got.

Take out the rear wheel speed sensor from the back of the final drive and clean it, no need to remove the final drive just use a small Torx driver to undo the retaining screw then pull it out and wipe it clean.

It feeds a square-wave signal output to the speedo and ABS unit. When it gets covered in fine swarf due to it being magnetic, the signal stops and you get ABS and speedo problems.

yeap done all of the above,
the speedo stopped working when I disconnected the main abs connector with the ignition turned on,this stopped the pump whineing, but as i said stopped the speedo, any way I disconnected the battery for a couple of mins and the speedo is back along with the stuck on servo,
fluid levels are good,
switchs seem good,

It has been suggested that the abs relay could be U/S but I have removed it and the servo keeps going.:nenau

the sun is beating down and I am pissed right off:tears

city gota beat QPR or I will go effinf nuts.

The relay is under the tool tray, not sure if its anything to do with brakes now though.

Anyways, trolled all the websites, checked everything I could and still the same,
spoke with Mike at Bristol Motoradd and he did 3 abs pumps in the last week,he sez he wasnt hopeful of a goodwill claim on anything as old as mine (05), So i went overthere and he put it on the GT1 and the only fault it showed was the pump u/s, he managed to clear the fault and it's ok now but he sez it will probaly come back some time,BMW won't entertain a claim for a new pump:tears,it was a long shot anyway.

Gives me time to get the bits together to remove the servos and abs pump:thumb2

BIG THANK YOU TO MIKE AT BATH ROAD (BRISTOL MOTORAD) TOP BLOKE:thumb2

Ps,I changed the oil in the final drive 500 miles ago and I pulled the speedo sensor to check it and the oil is black already and the sensor was coverd in metal filings already, final drive overhaul time soon I reckon.:tears

The relay under the seat is the starter relay that operates the starter motor. Nothing to do with the ABS as you said.

ABS is also uber-sensitive to battery voltage, don't go rushing off to change the ABS pump at £1500+ without first ensuring your battery is up to the job ( they don't tend to last beyond 3 years on the early 1200's).

EDIT: for the minimal cost of a litre of brake fluid, I would be changing the brake fluid ASAP in the hope that it cures your stuck servo. Plenty of info on the flushing procedure via the web, looks difficult but isn't (just takes about an hour or so). Don't just try bleeding the calipers, you'll end up with a disaster on your hands.

1200GS ABS/Servo removal

This covers it pretty well:

I have the same fault on my 06 GSA although my speedo is reading ok the rear servo is running and warning lights are flashing from start up and dont clear

I have recently replaced the battery because it was knackered is it possible there is a fault code that needs to be cleared before it will function correctly

I have checked all the listed problems that can cause this situation now my local dealer is keen to have a share of my hard earned cash suggesting we pop it on his GT1

Ian

ask the dealer to look at yr bike under a goodwill claim, they gota plug it in and find out whats wrong to submit the claim.you may get lucky and they do it for nowt.
