Is anyone else staying night before....??

God so much to do.... Need new tyres.... And service....

I was an instructor (trackdays, rider skills and race school) at Cadwell for a number of years and the first thing to say is that you will LOVE IT! It’s a fabulous track with lots of different types of corners all in a beautiful setting.
In addition to the helpful on comments from folk on here already here's a a few tips I hope you will find useful:

Bike – we used to “scrutineer” before allowing bikes on the track, but it’s not full on race scrutineering. All we were looking for was anything which was likely to be a hazard to either the rider or other people. So anything which was loose and likely to fall off was a good way to get sent back to the paddock! You wouldn’t believe the number of folk who turned up with chains hanging on the floor, exhausts which had fixing bolts missing and fairings that were flapping in the breeze :blast As long as your bike is in good condition with everything in place you will be fine.

Mirrors – don’t bother taping anything, but I would recommend either folding your mirrors back or turning them downwards. You really don’t want to be distracted by anyone behind you (like an instructor sitting 3 inches off your rear wheel grinning like an idiot!) and you want to be totally focused on what’s in front of you.

If possible it is a good idea to trailer the bike to and from the circuit as you will be knackered by the time you finish. If you can’t make sure you take a break before heading home and take on fluids and food. Also give yourself time to adjust back to normal road speeds ;)

You and your gear: An obvious one but sometimes forgotten - don't get wasted the night before!
With regards to clothing - in my day it used to be one piece or zip together two pieces leathers only but times have changed and I’m sure good quality CE approved textiles are allowed now – but do check the small print to make sure. I did work for Buell on one of their track days and a few folk got sent home for turning up in jeans (and I don’t mean motorcycle specific ones!). For one company I was asked to check every single helmet for a gold motorcycle sport sticker before they were allowed out, so it is worth just checking the T&Cs for what you have signed up to, but usually common sense prevails.

On the day – take your time and build up slowly. Don’t get sucked in by others and just ride for yourself and enjoy every minute. The most dangerous session always seemed to be the one just after lunch when folk have just eaten and their concentration has dropped so make sure you ease yourself back in after any break.
Use the first lap as a sighting one and warm your tyres up. Believe it or not I had more than one customer crash in front of me in the pit lane caused by them going mental on cold tyres as soon as they set off.
If you can get an instructor to show you the lines and coach you a bit then take advantage of this. They usually know what they are doing and are paid to help you to get the most out of your experience.

And finally – the one thing I seemed to say to customers more than anything else on every track day I did:
Relax and turn your f*cking head to look where you want to go!!!!!
The number of folk who tense right up and look 3 foot further than their front wheel is amazing and will completely cock up your cornering. Look up, turn your head and look for the exit!

That’s the key bits from me – enjoy your day, you will have a fabulous experience and it can be very addictive :thumb:)

Caldwell is THE best, it's a real fun track. Very technical in places and pretty fast in others.

You'll have a ball, enjoy!

Congratulations, I'll see you there :thumb2. What bike will you be on?

Im riding there and back on the day as I live about 1h 30mins away, but a hotel the night before does sound like a sensible idea.

Although its a training day and not a 'free for all', would you advise I remove my top box? It would be useful for carrying things there, but I guess i could use a rucksack? I assume there is a room for leaving any bags etc?

I would go with the top box as you almost certainly wouldn't be allowed on the circuit wearing a rucksack. If the top box is properly secured then there's a good chance they'll let you out with it (particularly as it's a training day). The preferred option though would be to take the top box off and leave it in a room. I used to do the circuit briefings in the bar behind the canteen (going back a few years now) and everybody left their kit in there whilst on track. I even left the computer and presentation equipment set up in there too and we never had anything disappear. You could always email the organiser in advance to check.

With regards to your question about ESA settings, one of the best things about doing these events is that your riding round in a relatively controlled environment so it's a great opportunity to try things out and see the impact. I would start on standard, do a couple of sessions to learn the circuit and get a feel for how the bike is behaving in different corners. Then try changing to hard and see what the difference is.

You'll get lots of track time and will be grinning from ear to ear by the end! Have a great time.

....

We used to stay in the Black Horse in Donnington on Bain. Good pub and good food with a great breakfast :thumb:thumb

On B roads and small A roads, I run mine on comfort most of the time. Only notice it floating when cases are full.
On a smooth track I'd expect sport to be the best. But it's easy to change on the fly. You might want to try the pillion setting to jack the back up a little speeds up the steering. To start with keep it simple with normal rider only preload.

I run mine on 2up Sports however I'm 6ft 5ish - 18stone ish (big boned ex rower / MTBer) and ride the bike fairly "hard". I find it "wallows" a little coming out of the corners if I run it in Comfort 2up.

For its size it handles really well. The handling is very predictable and front end orientated. Run my Tourace EXP tyres at 2.3 and 2.7 rear. (Didn't like 2.9bar in the rear). The handling is very safe and will run wide (on the EXPs) rather then tuck under when pushed.

Enjoy.

Never been to Cadwell, but I've done more than a few days at Snetterton and Brands Hatch, showing up with my R1100S Boxercup with panniers on :D
I aways locked all my stuff in the panniers and left them in a garage, next to other people's stuff (thanks Tanneman!!! :D ). Quite handy.

BTW, even if it is a training day, don't get in the track with "anything more than the bike attached to the bike".

I too have booked on this day- done a couple before on my blade with Hopp ( though I have done full on track days at Cadwell in the past on my GS- great fun )

Hopp days are really chilled- you`ll go much slower than you think but by the pm you`ll know the lines very well. Especially on this day as there are 30 min sessions- drink lots of water. AS they are quite long sessions I would drop your pressures somewhat-probably 34-34 to start with. (cold )

I will be on a red, one week old S1000r ( on my second track day on it- was at Cadwell last Friday )- I`ll be running 30 front 28 rear.

Well it's nearly time....

This time tomorrow we will be enjoying, what appears to be a great day...

I'm heading over this afternoon.... About 160 miles for me from Chester.

Picked my bike up from Williams late yesterday, serviced, rear brakes and new tyres.... Trying some MICHELIN Pilot Road 4.. As I do mostly road mileage, so will be interesting change from the metzeler tourance I've been on for 2000 miles....!!! Yes destroyed them.... Seems I'm a bit hard on tyres...:augie ....says the mechanic!!

So, I've booked into " The Kings Head "... Got a nice room, with a double bed...( need the space) for £45... Think it's only about 5 miles from the circuit .

Really looking forward to meeting a few people off here tomorrow.... Make yourself known.... I'm on a TB GSA..

And remember... Be careful out there!!... In the famous words from Hill Street Blues.... ( if your old enough to remember it) :)

Did California Superbike on my 09 GSA in 09.

All I did was ride it. No adjustments.

Scrutineers didn't insist or suggest anything other than tape on the mirrors to avoid distraction.

Did your day all go OK?- I have some good footage I`ll put on youtube and post- was on the red S1000r- really enjoyed it.
