I was perhaps a tad harsh on the shopping in Fort William.
Its great if you were to be going camping or anything to do with the outdoors, a superb selection and competitively priced . If you wanted stickers or fridge magnets or a decent bottle of malt its good as well. As you are staying in an hotel in Inversneckie, I think you have better options.

Cheers Grahame, did Fort George a few years ago when we were over in the car .... really enjoyed it, was a baltic day though and being right by the coast, it was rather fresh.

take a wee run to Chanonry Point for an hour after tea one night.....supposed to be the best pace in Europe to see dolphins.

Von K - Google mapped your suggested route back from Dunnet Head, it's not that much further compared to taking the A9 and looks a good bit more interesting ... will work this in. Cheers!

Bear in mind the whole of the road down through Altnaharra to Lairg is single track with passing places, so allow a bit more time than you think to do the route - but don't let that put you off, it's a belter of a road and if the weathers good you can really crack on. A few of the boys and girls from Dahn Sarf on here did that road at the GOTC 09 (Ullapool), they loved it.

Shame you haven't allowed a day-trip to Orkney, Ferries from Scrabster (Thurso) or Gills Bay (near J o' G).
West coast is a MUST!! Applecross highly over-rated but the hair-pins are character forming to say the least.
Watch out for nearly new Vauxhalls on the single track roads - Tourists, mainly foreign, who have no idea where they are let alone common courtesy

Brilliant, cheers again for all the suggestions folks. So many so I can't thank you all personally but thanks a million. Thanks to your input, hopefully my trip has just got a whole lot more interesting.

I do tend to take plenty of pics ... I'll maybe see about getting a ride report done and posted once it's all over.

Stirling is probably my favourite city but we did all these last Feb when we booked a wee cottage in Bonnybridge. Linlithgow Palace was great, as was the walk round the lake which gave ever changing views of same. Falkirk wheel was good too and enjoyed a wee nibble in the cafe afterwards. Nice wee workout walking up all those steps at Wallace Monument but well rewarded at the top.

+1 although it all depends on the tides. See Fortrose Cathedral then a meal at the Anderson - great food and a choice of 250+ single malts to sample (you might want to park the bike up though).

I agree Applecross is a must and the pub serves great food but a good route from Applecross is to head to Sheildaig - Kinlochewe - Gairloch - Ullapool - Inverness, if you want stunning scenery and a few places to stop to eat and look at.
