R100 GS, anyone got a drive shaft perhaps in need on refurb that they want rid of.

On the positive side, mate.. your not dead.

Best of luck with the repairs.

:beerjug:

Glad yer OK Phil and bike shafts can be replaced
could have been worse as you know - Look how much petrol you saved not going where yer were goowin :D

Back in action

Update is that we’re back in action! Bike has 54,000 miles on it and should now be good for a few more years.

After strip down thought we’d have the clutch out and inspect things.
All ok but decided to order and fit a new friction plate

Here it is fitted with splines lubed and awaiting gearbox

Nothing wrong with box but had a re-build with all new bearings, springs, seals etc and the circlip upgrade.

Drive shaft acquired which had covered 35,000 mls but universal joints were notchy so had it re-conned to as new standard by a mate’s firm – bloody awesome job as well.

Swing arm and final drive were split apart for cleaning and FD splines lubed before having new needle roller and pivot bearings fitted, then Jaber carefully slipped the shaft back into position :ymca

New short boot fitted between swing arm and gearbox along with new rubber over speedo cable

A steady test ride today revealed everything like a swiss watch and smooth as silk but the bloody fork seals are weeping now so had to strip the front end down ready for repair. This will be down to how the front end was ratcheted down during recovery , almost as if it were to hold 25tonne of concrete beams, muppets!

Phil, any sort of hint or clue before this failure? I know there's no hard and fast rule to this and they can just go very quickly, but I was just wondering.

Mid 80's
M6, Cannock.
Me on a police bike [road test and tyre bedding in]
Slight vibe, clutch in, BIG Vibe and instant wheel lock, new tyre down to canvas as I skid/slid to the hard shoulder with a much puckered sphincter holding onto the seat....
Constipation would NOT have been a problem..:eek

Same reason as Belper Phils...

The above is why I don't have any paralever BMW's....:rob

Which BMW (in use by the Police) had the Para rear end in the mid eighties? :nenau

Val.

Paralevers came in, in 1986 R100GS
The K1000 in the fuzz were monolevers :thumb2
West mids police had a couple of K1100's in 1987 as evaluiation bikes.
BMW often did things like this..
Bloody guinea pig bikes ....
K1100 was not officially released until motorshow 88 [again IIRC]:rob

So you pedantic twat, maybe I should have phrased it as mid to late 80's :D
FFS... give us a break I'm OLD :rob
