Shaft drive oil leak issues?

Just had the 600 mile service done on the bike. Rode it home about 4 miles, got off it and found what you can see below.
Now I'm gessing as its on the right of the wheel and it's below the main axel and drive shaft that its the main drive oil. Has this happened to anyone else after a service? It was fine before the service (600 miles exactly... no I didnt plan it!!!!).
Also, the garage have asked me to ride it back to them tomorrow. Will riding it in this state cause any damage?
Just wanted some opinions to help a nervous newbie GS owner!

Looks very similar to Blowzorn's bike on the Turkey trot.

The seals were fine.

The grease monkey simply hadn't done up the oil filler bolt (sits behind the wheel, near side, by the speed sensor) tight......

Uncle Alan rode his for a lot more than just a few miles, leaving a trail of talcum powder.....no harm done....just take a bit of care.....BuMW will make good, no doubt....

PS A little bit oil goes a long way. The rotating wheel has flung it, making it look possibly worse than it is. Have a look at some bikes with an overfree Scottoiler, on a hot day.

Scrub up the tyre. Ride to BuMW garage.

Better still, take the wheel off (easy) check the bolt and tighten, if required (easy). Scrub up tyre. Then drive to BuMW and ask them to check / refill (easy). Show them pic's or they might not believe you.

Failing that, get BuMW assist to take it and bring it back (if you are lucky).

I'm not sure whether you can ride with no oil in the shaft (or how much oil is still in there, assuming that's where the leak is), but I wouldn't fancy riding it anywhere with that much oil on the tyres. Can you send them a picture? Or a link to this page, as I'd hope they'd pick you up if they saw the state of your tyre.

brake fluid?

I really hope its not brake fluid, but if it is you'll need to get it clean pretty sharpish. Its horrible corrosive stuff and will take the paint of your wheels and do all sorts to other bits.

I'd take lots of pics, preferably with some proof of the date (like a local paper), then give it a good clean.

Hopefully they'll sort it out for you, but I'd keep an eye on the wheels for a bit afterwards.

Dont ride it,If the dealer wont lift it Ring bmw assist,Looks to dangerous to ride,

A little elbow grease

Was going to just wash the oil off it in the morning and ride it as is. The bloke at the garage said it should be safe to ride back, no damage will be caused... but I guess that's why I posted here. He hasn't seen it and I wanted a second, third, fouth and tenth oppinion from the GS brethren.

Trouble is it's my sole transport, so can't be waiting around for their van to be free to pick it up if I can get away with riding it.

looks like the filler cap on the wheel side of axle has come out or is loose.
dont ride it anywhere as its fookin dangerous and you will be on your arse at first corner.
ring bmw assist and get them to uplift it to the dealer.

Had the bike been test rode you would not have been left in this position,

Point taken. I'll get the assist people out to pick it up. Been a while since I used the trains, I guess it's time I found out if the service has improved. :nenau

Not necessarily so.

Blowzorn's bike was fine until we got to Anconna, in Italy.

I am not sure that they change the final drive oil at 600 miles, so there is a chance it has been working lose since the day it left Germany.....600 miles ago....If they do, it may take more than few miles to work its way fully loose and the oil to bubble out.....

I can't remember how much oil is in the final drive. It's not much, that's for sure......

OIL

changed at 600 service. only 220cc but when it warms up it dont half spread fast.

....aha, they do change it....:thumb2 .......Didn't think it was much....I definitely suspect the loose filler bolt demons have been active.......

It's really easy to tighten.....and to forget to tighten....probably rushing to fit 1,000,000 ring senders, that morning.....

It may be a simple and easily solved problem, but I wouldn't ride it like that. there's the risk of crashing, and also of causing more damage. I'd be getting them to collect it and return it, and if they can't fix it straight away, providing you with a loan biek to cover it. It is, to all intents and purposes, a brand new bike.

£12k of bike and only 1 vote for riding it.... I'll go with the majority opinion and get it picked up.

Cheers for all the advise people. I'll confirm what the issue was once the garage has fixed it. I'm convinced by Wappings explanation, and that it probably would be safe to ride (like the garage say - and that I'm sorely tempted to do)...... but I'm going to play safe on this one and get it picked up.

Thanks again for all the swift replies!

Mine looked like that when the seal behind the wheel bearing cover went... irrespective of cause consider that it may have contaminated your rear brake pads and if the 08 brakes are still linked then the rear will be applied when you use the front brake.

Option three....But could just as well have been option one, or two....It's just the sequence they came into my head in.....The truth of course is, that Blowzorn had no choice but to ride it, if he wanted to get to Turkey........Good luck....:thumb2

As davy f said what if you had an accident,? Who would sort out damage ect,They would say you rode the bike knowing there was oil leaking onto your back wheel,

Update on this one......

OK, I turned into a woman over night and completely changed my mind (again) and decided to ride it in this morning. Tyre was dry after being washed thoroughly last night, and no sign of any dripping overnight.
By the time I got to the dealers (4 miles - felt fine riding, no nasty noises, no slipping - but almost all left turns) it was in the same state as the photo's. Absolutely cacked in oil again around the rim and sidewall of the tyre.

Anyway, dealer did the business. Told me it was an O-Ring that had been damaged during the oil change. The oil level was still quite good despite how bad it looks. 30mins and the oil was changed again, new o-ring, and they thoroughly cleaned the tyre, brake disc etc.
I made sure they'd done a test ride as well before I got back on it.

One to watch out for if your due a drive shaft oil change though.
Again, thanks for the swift replies (even if I did eventually buck the majority view). :o
