Shaft query....

Ok don't shout at me I am an F800GS lover at the moment.

I have been told that the shaft drive on BMWs has to be changed every 30k miles....is this true...or is it Gomez trying to scare me off having a 1200...

Ive had my shaft for 40 years now and its still in good order, well sometimes it shrinks in cold weather

Shaft failure 30k
FPC 10K
Warped disc every 20K
Angle drive bearing Failure 40K

It would make like so much easier & you would know how much to leave in the bank every month

05 1200,52.5K miles and 1 worn out rear disc and now the fronts are warped.
abused everytime I ride it.

yes they usually only last between 20 - 30 thousand miles.

There's not much to fail on the shaft apart from a pair of UJ's and these generally last a long time, I'd guess many will go past 100k without anyone even giving them a second thought.

The final drive is a weaker point but there's no simple generalisation about how long they last, a few have beeen reported to fail at less than 10k, others (like mine) were fine for 80k. Like any problem (FPC's for example) people post to tell us about failure and not longevity so it's very hard, unless you have access to BMW's warrenty database, to draw any sensible conclusions about what the average lifetime may be. Other than variation in the quality of the assembly, the major influence on lifespan will be the way the bike is ridden and on what roads, the wieght the bike is carrying and the servicing.

I spite of no hard information to go on, I'd guess few FD's will make it to 100k and only few will fail below 20k.
