Gents,

My recently acquired 02 plate 1150GS has 56,000 miles on it, and is a thing of beauty, however, i cannot help but notice that in traffic, or when travelling along on a neutral throttle, when I then accelerate there appears to be rather a lot of what I can only describe as driveline shunt, like there is too much play / wear in the shaft drive, and its plays catch-up with the engine when accelerating.
:nenau
Any ideas ?

Do the revs increase without additional forward motion which means it could be your clutch? If not then it may be the damper joint thingy breaking down.

You will probably have to starting taking it apart from the rear to the front to identify the fault more precisely because there's a pile of parts which could be accused of causing your symptoms. :thumb

Nope, I dont think its the clutch, no slipping or judder there.......

Gents,

My recently acquired

There's the clue.....

Have you previously owned and ridden a BMW with agricultural shaft drive linked directly from rear wheel to crank with lots of undamped metal connections between the two ?. :D

If not then the answer is "they all do that sir", and it's usually a bit of a shock on new owners, as is getting it into 1st from neutral..

Don't worry, just learn to be gentle and smooth on the throttle.

Juddering

As above and you'll also find this occurs by pulling away in a higher gear, these have a very high bottom gear anyway so weither change down on use a lower gear when accelerating.

Hmmm, let's see, an r1100s, a previous r1150gs and an r1200gs.....yep, I think I've got previous experience thanks :D

Well it's a good job i asked, as mind reading isn't my forte.:D

Neither is reading apparently. :D

Feck me, if you can read that sig, without highlighting against a white background - you'd be lucky

Cut Steptoe some slack:rolleyes:

You're right - i have signatures disabled so can't see or read them.

Carry on presuming. :thumb2

Catchup - not really a word to describe play in the drive shaft, more like a slipping clutch really.

Bike up on main stand, turned off, select gear, turn rear wheel by hand, how much does it turn, Any excessive play will be apparent and could be any of the components that make up the drivetrain.
Comparison = my whole drivetrain has been overhauled, with no wear in output splines or clutch splines, first gear selected, rotate rear wheel 7 cm rotation, other gears are the same.

Sigs turned off on mine too - pointless irritating past time

Aha, someone with something useful to say at last, thanks for that, i'll have a look and see if mine is by any measure excessive in comparison. Cheers.:thumb2

This could also worth a check. You dont need to strip it down to check, just pull the rubber gaiter back between the bevel box and shaft and use a mirror and torch to have a look up the shaft drive tunnel. The rubber damping joint in the shaft can break up. Maybe in the hands of previous owners, someone didnt index the shaft to the UJ's.

Cheers, i'll have a look at that also. Thanks for the advice.
