shall I just do it?

Been toying with the idea of a GS for just over a year now. Went to the dealers yesterday and saw a 2006 1200 GS which looked pretty mint. Approx. 15k miles non-ABS. I'm really really tempted to go down this afternoon and put down a deposit.
Just wondering about it being non-ABS, in one sense I think it would be a good move as it's one less thing to go wrong. On the other most of the GSs I've seen have had ABS on - I take it that it's because it's the most popular option?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Cheers all,
SM

Well if you ever really need ABS, it's great to know that you've got it.

You can always turn the ABS off each time you ride, if you want to.

If you don't have it, then you don't have the option.

If you catch my drift......

In some ways it depends what you think of your riding whether you need abs or not. If your confident you ride defensively and could stop for most things, then dont worry. If you ride too close to everything and dont look where your joking then maybe you should look for an abs model.

I've got a non abs but would equally have bought an abs model but imo it just doesn't matter.

I just bought 3 weeks ago an 06 1200 GS with 5k from bmw and have already had it recovered back to the dealers with a problem.

Personally, i hope that i bond with it soon as i couldn't stand riding a bike that i didn't like and at the moment thats kinda how i feel.

Prone to lots of problems as you're proably aware but maybe like me, just cross everything that nothing goes wrong.

Dave:)

Seems like a fair point. Although what happens if there is a fault? Does the ABS just simply switch off or can the servo be affected?

Sorry to hear you've had problems so soon after taking ownership.

The one I'm looking at hopefully has all the niggles sorted due to the higher mileage although I guess only time would tell.

I don't think I'm too bothered about having abs or not as I've never had an abs option on any of my previous bikes. I just wondered if it was something that was particularly useful on the GS due to the size and weight of the thing?

Go non ABS one less expensive thing to go wrong, one thing though its an 06 bike and will soon be out of warranty dont rush in & buy have a look on MCN web site for a near new bike there are tonnes of R1200 GS on there.

JUST DO IT!

ABS/NON ABS - doesn't really matter either way its still a great motorcycle. Picked mine up yesterday (ABS version) and am well happy with it. Would have been equally happy with it if it didn't have ABS.....

You wont regret it!

I've done it!

Thanks for the replies...

I went into the dealership yesterday and put a deposit down on a 2008 model. It's got the 'comfort pack' and the 'dynamic pack' so I ended up going with an ABS model after all.

I pick it up Thursday :) Can't wait!

well done that man :clap:clap:clap I think you were right to leave the 06 bike well alone as it will be soon out of warranty & we all know BMW"s are not the most reliable bikes :ronno not like a jap bike :spitfire:spitfire:spitfire

I've had my second hand '08 for a few months now, appart from the seat on long journeys, it's by far the best bike I've owned:D

I'm now the proud owner of a 2008 r1200gs. Picked the bike up in my lunch hour. Can't wait for the journey home :)

Well done i'm sure you will love it!! Had my 08 GS since March and enjoy every minute of riding.Had the usual EWS and Fuel gauge problems all fixed under warrenty but the fun of riding it out weighs these minor hicups.

Photos coming -- just as soon as I can get out for a ride and catch a bit of light to get a decent pic or two! The nights are sure drawing in!

Managed to get out yesterday and take a few pics of my new GS :)
