My current Shoei XR900 is 5 years old now and while wandering up and down Westgate road last week trying on lids, more of that later, remembered about the new lid test that will be out before long. I don`t want to buy a lid with the protection of a baloon so was wondering when it`s actually coming out & what current lids have been tested?
I liked the Arai Condor (I think?) but the new Tour X was a mile out with the xl size. It rattled round on my head like a bucket and the L nearly ripped my lugs off. I tried the Shoei "tour X" on too but imo the peaks on them are worse than useless. Too far up to shade so might as well not have it on.
I also liked the Shoei flip front one.
So I might just keep an eye out for some deals :thumb2

The SHARP test results for some lids have been out since spring - Linky. However theres still a fair bit of discussion over whether there actually meaningfull tests or not, and a number of manufacturers aren't impressed.

could it be that these manufactures who are not impressed perhaps their products did not perform too well??

there's an article about it in this months 'BIKE' mag,

Basically some manufacturers aren't happy as one of its tests are at a point that they don't regard or there own tests have shown doesn't hit the ground IE around the ear, so one of the ARAI helmets get 2/3 stars since there helemets are thinner at this point but a £60 Lazer helmet gets 5 stars.

It could be. It could also be the case that testing helmets in a specific publisised area allows companies to strengthen that area at the expense of others. I think some of the top lid makers want the test to be on random areas as is the case with the U.S's snell marking.

Anyway heres a link to some comments by an Arai employee (a lot of their lids got three stars)

And here' s an Arai (three star rated) helmet doing it's job.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TruLFYijL6U&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TruLFYijL6U&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

You'll note the number of impacts in different places. I'd rather the helmet was strong all over not just in two places.

So it would appear as though were not much further forward than we were before they started with the Sharp Test.

Might be a 3 star helmet but it looked like it was doing a 5 star job to me, he took at least 7 direct hits to his head and he's still alive.

The test results don't tell me anything. What a waste of time...
In Germany we have the Stiftung Warentest which goes into a product thoroughly and gives you results which can be understood. Star rating?? What is this, kindergarten??

Interesting how quickly they removed his helmet

After reading a couple of articles about the testing I think I`ll just buy the one I like and fits well than go searching for a 5 star lid :nenau

helmets

to the comes on helmets i think the the Arai Condor is a good helmet at about 100pound plus i don't ride off road and was a better up grade from my last one a hjc it did its job but had not mum padding Sean

:nenau i can't see what all the fuss is about

when is the last time you heard of someone dieing because their helmet was not up to a certain standard:nenau

i think by the time you or an object has enough force to crush/penetrate a helmet and cause some sort of brain injury you'll be fecked anyway whether it's your neck or spine breaking or internal injuries.

i think too much hype and people too gullible:D

According to RIPE magazine, all the manufacturers signed up to the test procedure. Until the results were announced...........!!!

Personally, I think they are pretty much as good as each other, just find one that fits and is comfortable.

totally agree i have a Multitec and i would have bought a nitro flip if the inside was a bit more comfortable
i bought the Multitec due to comfort and features... not on safety ratings

Hype, bollox, hype, bollox . . . . .

Absolutely. . . .

Once a helmet has achieved the safety standard, all we need to care about is fit and comfort. As stated above, many other things are gonna kill us before the helmet is at fault.

IMHO.

Personally, I'm an Arai fan and have worn one for 5 hours in complete comfort.

Tend to agree. I'll keep buying Arai's despite the lowly 3 stars. I find them better built, more comfortable for my shape of head and longer lasting than any others I've tried. And if Nikano can survive a crash like that ^^ wearing one, that'll do for me.

Pluck
