Greetings and Thank you for allowing me in. I have a GS1200R, 2016 with 15K kms.
I live in the centre of Amsterdam so my GS is my way of getting around this smokey city easily.
The GS is for all intense and purposes a pretty good bike! I'm 65 and started at 11, Francis Barnet 250cc, the GS
is my favorite of all BM's over the decades!. No complaints, well accept one, the F.......ing Gearbox. it's horrible.
If you live in Town and traffic lights are your worst enemy, the gearbox is a nightmare!
My Dad Massey Furgerson was smoother. I also have Shift Assist Pro.................
I've read SO many comments I am confused.
There is a small box of tricks carefully tucked into the gear shift mechanism that I read has magnets in it!!
Since new, upshifts 2-3. 3-4. etc are as reliable as a British Bus Timetable. Interestingly going down ALWAYS works.
What's all this resetting stuff, I really can't find a clear thread on the subject. Our BMW dealers are shite!......but I own my own garage, so I'm a techi.
Seems I am by far not alone!...... OK, not 1-2, but the rest should work perfectly. Throttle on for ups, off for downs. Simple?.....

Sorry for this again, but I have to ask!....... Anyone for a Coffee Shop Run? ..... Dank U Wel.... Cheers.

You still need to match your RPM to the correct gear. Or it won't let you shift smoothly. This is always the complaint I hear about Shift assist. And I always say:

It's Shift "ASSIST"... Not Shift "you don't have to ride properly anymore"

The 1300 GS shift assist pro on the demo bike I rode a week ago was far improved on the 1200gs implementation. It was actually safe to use pretty much any gear up or down. I wish I could turn it off on my 1200. Wonder if the new style can be retrofitted

Sir, with respect, you are assuming something. As a professional Gearbox Builder, I appreciate shifting points. Each engine has it's own characteristics and the GS is no exception to this rule. Min change for me is 3000 and the system should cope with up to 6500 faultlessly. It doesn't. Truly I love it when it works, butter indeed. But it's the daily buts.....WD40, works for a few days, then bucks... and bucking is what happens when you go for the super fast click up!, selector is locked...... not safe, not nice, especially when you are indeed with a wide open throttle and going up to 6000 rpm!..... it needs to work......................... When working, mine only takes a very gentle nudge, which is super nice............
Listen its a BMW, it has to work!

Turn it off? No need, just don't use it...... I am hoping for something on this endless subject. Seems to be a big problem!

I've been with my GS for a few years now. Generally a pretty perfect bike
.
The shift assist, when it works, is pretty perfect. Super useful, no banging helmets and goes up and down like butter. Love it.
But, those are the good days. Other days he just refuses to work or works sometime and then jams. Really annoying when you go to tuck your toe under the lever and nothing happens..
This story has been going on for nearly 3 years and now I want a fix....

It has been implied.... the shift unit needs cleaning . So, I removed the middle bolt from the unit and disconnected the gear lever.
Should be able to ease it off and then unplug it....

It seems very very firmly placed on the gear-lever shaft.......... Has anyone got any good ideas how to get this off without breaking anything! ....

Some advice and direction would be appreciated. Thank you.

Mine works flawless its an impressive thing, i love it.

Ask another GS rider to ride yours and they will know instantly if its not working as it should.

obviously riding slow and shifting from 1st to 2nd will be jerky unless your accelerating.
i've geared while slowly moving in traffic and it can jump a little, but all other changes are pretty smooth.

If you set off from a standstill and accelerate hard all the way to 6th its as smooth as butter, and allows you to accelerate quickly.
You get used to it and know what works and what doesnt, in situations you know QS will be jerky use the clutch 👍

Same here, on my 2016 bike it was fine up and down as long as you were either on the gas or closed throttle

Riding in boots helped , it didn’t like a delicate touch

On the 1300 it’s superb 👍

Sounds to me if the farmer cant swim it must be the Speedos fault as my 1250 shifts very good…Also the Massey Ferguson 178 I cut my teeth on to learn how to shift a unsynchronized transmission was very quiet to shift after I had mastered the technique 👍So blame yourself or the japanese who build these R1200/1250/1300 gearboxes for BMW…Having said that I never use gear assist pro because I can do it quieter and faster myself…🤣

As for technique preload the gear lever and use the clutch only as much as to take a little pressure off the gears and then it shifts very quick , quiet and smooth 👍Much better than the Pro that assists 🤣 And yes the 1300 is better in that regard but still clunky…The nature of the beast to get the heavier driveshaft and flywheel engage smoothly as the man still beats the machine 👍At least a few of them…🤣 But help is coming as BMW brings the automatic gear shift without a clutch for the ones who really should not ride in first place who will bitch later that stuff breaks or does not work right…🤣👍

I would love to think so!.... Well, I finally got this little box of tricks off. Wow, that was fun. It's a lot smaller than I realised and once in bits on my bench, the problem was there. A TINY washer was jammed in the foot of the damper. No wonder I had such strange responses...Factory fitted problem!..... I removed the rouged washer and now (after 3 years), super shifting, lovelly. Should have fixed it earlier, but life can be busy!.... Pity we can't uploads a photo of the unit, it's really interesting inside, a tiny damper that is a mini version of the big one that supports both front and rear suspension, all 22mm of it!...... Thanks.

Unfortunately pre 2017 update 1200 gearbox is poor and gsap just makes it worse, my 2014 model had 3 replacement gsap units under warranty and numerous ecu updates and it never got any better.
My 1999 1150 gs has a better box, now my 1200 started without gsap ( it was fitted as part of a compensation package by BMW ) and even though the box was poor before but the gsap made it worse, if I had kept the bike I would have had it removed and disabled from the system

Ive just stripped mine and the unit was very oily inside.Either an oil bath or the damper had oil in and now it doesnt 😁 Anyone confirm?
