Had my bike on its side stand for a while at work and had top pop out to get something from my top box and noticed the oil eye on my shift is empty, should I be filling this or does it run from engine oil? Or does the engine just need to be fired up to pump it round? I've got it on centre stand now to see if any appears but I'm unsure whether these bikes need shift oil top ups?

Do you mean the oil sight glass on the side of the crank case?
If so put the bike on the centre stand go and have a coffee then check the oil
if you cant see any then top up carefully until you see oil in the sight glass no more than half way.

Other on the crank case actually on the side if the shaft drive itself. There is a window about half the size of the main oil eye with what looks like a 3 pronged something or other inside of it, sorry I can't be more descriptive... It just looks like an oil eye maybe for the shaft unit and it's empty on the side stand, I'll go check again soon now it's on its centre stand.

You need to post a picture mate... I can't make head nor tail out of what you're saying.. sorry.

I think you are referring to an "Oil-Eye" gearbox sight glass. This is an aftermarket unit which replaces the screw in gearbox filler plug. There is a useful video on you tube. Hope this helps.

You beat me to it. This is exactly what I also thought the op was referring to.

But I'm still trying to work out how it would give a reliable fill level indication on the bevel box? If you can see oil in it when it's on the centre stand, then surely all is well?. Don't look at it when it's on the side stand!

I've yet to see a gearbox that used oil .................. if a gearbox needs oil it means it's leaking. And if it's leaking you don't need a sight glass to let you know, it'll be pretty obvious. :D

The only true way to answer your query would be to - - peace of mind
Undo the gearbox drain plug and check the amount. = O.8 - 1.0 ltr
Same would go for your bevel box Drain plug = 230 - 250ml
And not on the side stand :blast bike needs to be upright....
Although now you have checked now upright Methinks it's been answered...

I take it this would replace the filler plug on the g/box?
I thought you filled the box until the oil just started to dribble out over the filler hole threads. There wouldn't be much, if anything to see anyway?

if it is on the side stand then no oil would show in the sight glass - but plenty of others have told you that already, I thought that I would be a tosser and repeat - breaks the monotony of Day #19 at work - 7 to go.

When I change my oil, I undo the fill plug first (cos it sucks if that is seized and the drain plug is removed (not a problem in this case but can be in other application))
Then I lay my bike down on the ground and drain the g/box oil out.
Then lift up, lay down on the other side, drain plug in, fill with oil (the correct amount) fill plug re-install
Lift bike upright, on to center stand and then carry on

piece of cake

yep, if it is using oil, it has a leak and should be pretty obvious

Yes, that sight glass is totally irrelevant.
Unless you ride underwater a lot.
