Shimmering monitor screen

It shimmers at the bottom, the top's ok.

I've just had a play with the screen menu, I pressed 'Degauss' - I think I know what it's supposed to do - the screen shimmered, sort of went 'boingng', and settled down again but was no better than it was in the beginning. It's still perfectly useable, nobody else has mentioned it so far.

As it's about 7 years old, does that mean that it's due for scrapping anyway?

Is there a transformer near to it,r something else carrying a fair bit of current?

If so move it away. If not then it's likely time to go get an LCD monitor and save yourself some desk space.

Yes, there is! A low-voltage halogen table lamp. Switch it off, and hey presto, problem solved!
