Hi there
just checking to see if anyone has had experience shipping a bike from Belfast or elsewhere in the UK to Norway. A few of us are looking at a trip to Norway in September 2015, with the cancelation or the Denmark ferry its working out a very long way around. We are thinking it might be more cost and time efficient to ship and fly.
We are still working on the routes but they will be dependant on where we arrive.
saying that we are not in fear of doing the big miles on the right roads!
any advice would be must appreciated.
expected team
GS adventure
S1000xr - if I can get my hands on one
Suzuki 750 gixer
Kawa 10xr

we like to mix it up a bit!

cheers

Shipping, no.
But i sold a Bike to a friend in Finland.
It was cheaper for him to pay my expenses to ride it there and fly home than 'ship it' in any fashion!
Good Luck.

Depending on how far north you want to head. You are getting kinda late in the year weather wise .:thumb2

There's a freight ferry runs overnight from Immingham (near hull) to Brevik in Norway. Apparently it takes bikes with their riders, but freight takes priority.
It's run by DFDS- google it and also if you google enough, you will find reports of other riders who have done same.
We're planning on doing it next year or year after, so have been looking at options, this is definately the best.

Yeah Immingham Brevik is a great route.

However, I 'booked' in February of the year of departure and didn't get confirmation of a place until a few days before my 'booked' departure date - because any freight gets priority.

Plus I was travelling alone.

In a group much more difficult. As there are only 12 berths available.
Might be easier in September than July when I used the ferry - but :nenau

I think this is down to some regulations or other for freight ferries.
Maybe someone on this site knows this?

ps
Have done Hull Rotterdam - 1000 kms to Hirtshals - did this in one day. 60 Euro ferry to Kristiansand. Denmark, easy riding good free running motorway all the way. So 8/10.
This year did Harwich Esbjerg - 750km through England then 320km to Hirtshals. Run down through England very busy congested motorways, not pleasant. 5/10.

If I was going to Norway again I'd would opt for Newecastle Ijmuiden, only 200km from home then 1000km through Denmark. 9/10.

This must be a good option for you guys starting in NI too.

Book early to get the best deals.

Don't leave the Hirtshals until too late. It is a VERY busy ferry and the prices ramp up hugely closer to the departure date.

Try dropping Tony an email at EUROBIKETRANS http://www.eurobiketrans.co.uk/ I know he is looking at shipping to Norway next year, if not already. Great to deal with and may be able to sort from Ireland. I've used his company and very happy.

Some great advice thanks - maybe sept is too late in the year - it's such a large country difficult to know where to start

As Arty said, if there are four of you it could be tricky getting on the same DFDS ferry. However, when I went this year (August) there were only five freight drivers plus me out of Immingham. DFDS also sail to Ebsjerg from Immingham so that could be an alternative for you if you can't get on the Brevik route. It's a great place to ride so good luck with the trip. Use the hytte on campsites. Cheap as chips with four of you.

Davem,

That DFDS would be a good connection travelling from Belfast, Immingham to Ebsjerg or Brevik. I am guessing you travelled to Brevik and landed right in the middle of biking heaven? was it expensive?
the Esbjerg connection might work also but the connecting ferry from Hirtshals to Kristiansand is difficult to catch, also the Brevik from Immingham timings are very early without a stopover in England.
I think this ferry timetables are here to test us!

Hi Kings

Was the ferry expensive? It was about £230 from Immingham to Brevik, but that includes private en suite cabin and your meals (set times, but free tea, coffee and snacks available 24/7). Is Norway expensive? Yes, but there are ways to keep your costs down.

DFDS don't confirm their sailing schedules until about a month before and won't take a booking until about then either. I was hoping to catch the Sunday morning 05:00 ferry arriving in Brevik 08:00 Monday, but that wasn't running so I ended up on a ferry leaving Sat at 11:00 that called into Gothenburg then onto Brevik for the Monday morning. Still better for me than the North Shields ferry then long ride up from Amsterdam, and I like travelling on ships. On the return route I caught the ferry from Ebsjerg to Immingham, only one night on the boat. Staff at Ebsjerg were excellent. I was there early and spent a couple of hours in their cabin watching footy, free internet and free coffee. Get into Lane 1 when departing from Immingham as you need to speak with the staff in the office before heading towards the ferry. As you might expect, everything is set up for lorries not bikes which means you can't reach the intercom - unless you've got really long legs. ;)

From Brevik it is only about 2-3 hours before you start hitting the spectacular scenery.

I can recommend Overlanders of Wexford (website in an earlier mail above) for both bike transport only or organised tours.
I've been abroad with them twice and see from their website they're doing Norway in summer 2015 which I'm considering.
Worth a call to them for a chat about your needs.
