shocks

Had Wilbers on my first 1200.

A revelation compared to the stock suspension.

Shocks

Got Ohlns front and rear on my 2005 gs1200. Night and Day better than stock especially 2 up with luggage. Sublime damping etc giving greater control and confidence. Definitely my recommendation.

Thanks for the reply's.
Anyone who is using the ohlins could you tell me if you have them serviced on a regular basis. I have been
Quoted £150 a shock for the serving.
Makes buying a second hand pair a bit expensive if the first thing you need is a service.
New or used what do you think.
Cheers Tony.

I've done 27,000 miles in the 18 months since my Ohlins were fitted and I'l be fucked if I'm taking them off every 12,000 miles to have a service as per the recommendation...

I will do it this winter though and I'm sure there will be nothing wrong with them...:thumby:

Fitted Wilbers to my 09 GSA (ESA).
They have totally transformed my bikes ride and handling.
Half the price of Ohlins, and arguably just as good, if not better.

Truly excellent bits of kit.

Plus 1 :thumby:

I have Wilbers on my current 06 GSA which I purchased from this very site.

The rear one had done 1200 miles and the front one was brand new and had never been fitted. You don't realise just how shit the OE stuff is untill you fit the decent clobber :thumby:

Maxton, superb quality and service, Richard at Maxton recons every 4 years or so is fine for normal road use.

I have my Ohlins served every 2 years and it does make a difference. Think its about £180 for the pair but it's like riding a new bike after.

wilbers

I got the wilbers, cost me £1200 for the full monty, but I have to say they transformed the ride.:JB

I was sceptical about aftermarket suspension before I did this.:bow

I've been wondering about getting a pair of Wilburs fitted to my 2008 which has done 29000 miles on the stock shocks - my first GS. From this thread sounds like this is really worth doing whatever the condition of the originals.

Last bike was an R1150RS and put an Ohlins rear shock on that and it really improved the ride.

You won't have noticed just how bad the orginals have become untill you change

Mine has the original front that now has 44K under the wheel and a warranty rear with 17K under it. The handling could be better as I can feel some slight swaying and floating going on. But the bike handles so much better that any of my previous bikes I'm happy enough for now. Im also doing a lot of motorways which don't really stress the suspension.

But having seen how a Wilbers transformed an Aprilia Pegaso, my GSA will be getting a set in due course.

Shocks are precision engineered (a lot more than the engine etc) and have a very tough time so an annual check is really the least to be expected. Leaving it long enough to feel the difference with new oil/fluid is risking internal damage. I made had an original Dutch WP shock rebuilt when the damping failed. The old oil had gone to sludge and the shock was never the same again.

My 1200's shocks were changed at less than 3000 miles to Maxtons ,the rear had already been replaced under warranty 300 miles previously.
The handling was transformed , from day one the standard non esa shocks were bloody awful .
The standard ones on my old 1150 were never a problem until ten times that mileage
