Shoei Hornet DS owners.

I saw an online retailer add for the Shoei Hornet DS meeting DOT/Snell95 regs. I assume the online retailer used info from a US website, or was selling imported helmets from the US into the UK. Just in case though could UK Hornet DS helmet owners check your helmet to see if there is a DOT label on the rear of the helmet, or any wehere a DOT/Snell95 label may be. I'm asking because I'd like a good helmet to use (legally) both in the UK/Europe and the US.

The UK sourced Hornet which I bought last weekend has, as you'd expect, no Snell or DOT mark on it.

Having said that, my wife and I both have Arai Signets which we bought in the USA. They're both Snell and DOT marked. We've used them here in the UK for some time without giving it a thought.

I've owned and used an TOUR X for about 4 years, it was one of the first in the uk.I tried the hornet on the other ay and hated it. The lining was scratchy and uncomfortable and the forehead lining moved about as I put it on. It may look newer than a tour x but it's not a patch on the quality.

Hornet lining moving on your head? I found that too. a bit strange, but probably not a safety issue if it fits and is properly fastened.

There is a law issue over helmets not carrying either the British or European certification. If you fall off, cross your fingers the insurance company don't start asking questions.

FYI the Arai has been on sale in the UK for over ten years.

On the other hand, the Hornet is lighter - 1.56 Kg vs 1.70 for the Tour X; it's also much quieter and arguably better ventilated. I don't find the lining to be scratchy and it only moves about when it's not properly studded to the polystyrene inside the shell.

The only downside for me is that the peak is a bit short so it's not so easy to keep a low sun out of your eyes by just dropping your head a bit.
