Allihies again.. but off to Asia soon....
So, as I am planning a long trip and have not used a Garmin in years as the Phone was always good enough just using Google maps. My question is for a trip from Ireland to India, in some countries I will have no internet access, is there a decent APP outside of Google Maps.

I did have a quick look before posting, saw some stuff that I have never heard of, so I ask.

Thanks

MRA has both a planner and an android compatible navigation solution, worth a look.

I am using the planner (My Route App) for which I paid €100 (lifetime).

After learning a few lessons, I think it is a good app, supported by good tutorial videos and a forum. The navigation system is on offer for €69 (lifetime) .

I use an XT on the bike and google maps in the car but the navigation system appeals to me as a bit of brain food, plus using MRA for the planning part is better than using My Maps (Google).

Are you committed to an Androi

Thanks I will look into it, I want to use my phone only and happy to download maps and pay for them
Are you committed to an Android phone?
Yes I guess I am, or at least I won't use an Iphone, if that is what you are referring to!

Just installed the MRA navigation app on my phone and asked it two routes from my house to two different places, both times it takes me off road onto tracks that Garmin never sent me down. Funnily enough I have spent a year trying to get Googlemaps to take one of these off line and I have just succeeded in that.

I have co pilot on my tablet,

it will run without cellular connection for 30 days before you need to say hello to a cell tower

14-26 pa depending on level of cheapskateness

OSMand you can download the relevant maps for offline use. Itchy boots seems to be using it FWIW. Again subscription required to download the relevant maps.

Oh and you can download the free version and Ireland maps for free and see if you like the interface.

Its years since I went to India.
I used Garmin 276c and just plotted the major towns to passthrough/near, so none of that turn-by-turn stuff.
Just kept heading in the direction of the pointer.
That and paper maps.

I use MRA now especially for bike pre planned routes but TomTom mobile app is also very good.

The TomTom online route planner is pretty poor so I use MRA for that and import the gpx to TomTom as a back up but used MRA the whole time on my last mini trip.
