Just listening to a programme on R4 about people taking advantage of the poor Stirling rate in Eire. Seems the shops in border towns in the North are busy with people from the South.

Anyone here doing cross border shopping?

The shoppers from the south have given a much needed boost to the shopkeepers in the border counties I agree. But for us locals it's been a nightmare. Traffic backed up for miles, people fighting over parking spaces and trolleys. It go so bad on occassions police had to be called as people were battering each other. Inside the shops was no better. Taking goods out of peoples trolleys and hands telling them "they're not yours until they're paid for"

On the main road into Newry from the south cars where parked by the side of the road and people were sleeping on them over night in order to be first in and avoid the crowds.

In Sainburys they couldn't pack out the alcohol quick enough. Some were buying the alcohol and selling it on.

I could go on :toungincheek

Hilarious from here:D

Btw my son is moving to your neck of the woods, Carlingford as a watersports instructor guess he'll be shopping in the north too.

bussiness in the north is booming,it was on the news last night that the most recession proof place in ireland or england is the north.
i know WOMEN who left here at 4 in the morning to shop in asda in newry
they sat for 2 hours in a traffic jam then waited 45 minutes for a parking space.
it then took half a hour to get a trolly and an hour to get checked out.
they came outside to see 2 women battering the heads off each otherover a trolly.
a few weeks ago asda in enniskillen was closed for health and safety reasons as the isles were full of people and no one could move in the place.
a lot of the northern shops are advertising in the south now and the southern shops are really suffering.
i am about an hour from enniskillen and the amount of poeple i know who go up every week is crazy
its good for the north but shops down here will close at an alarming rate is the sterling rate does not change soon

Was up to Newry new years eve.. Probably spent about 500quid/euros (same difference !!)
Boot stuffed with Baby food, nappies, car seat for babbie (Starting to see a theme here?) plus lots of other stuff.
To give an example, 200ml Aptimil baby food cartons are between €1.19 and €1.39 in shops in the south.
Sainsburys in Newry charge 56p each. Child seat in Mothercare in Dublin: €199, Mothercare Newry £89...Similar savings on lots of other stuff.

My only concern is that eventually the big shops are going to have to restock and some of this will come from the Eurozone.. So are prices going to creep up??

Oh Mandy, sorry for not nipping in while in the area, but this little madam didn't allow.

On the Sainsburys Newry theme, seemingly they 'flew in' 100 staff to help out at the Newry store before Christmas - Newry International Airport is now on the map...

I bought a load of hi fi stuff from ricer sounds in belfast (by telephone) before xhristmas. Saved a fortune and it was delivered by courier a day later :thumb2.

Was in Newry shopping while listening to this. Oh the irony.
Wasn't too bad on saturday as we were early enough, but no parking spaces and getting a bit manic by the time we left. Prices are definiely making it worthwhile at the minute.
Being from Monaghan I've seen this all my life and it's been swings and roundabouts. In the punt days no one would buy petrol or groceries in the south, in more recent times the south won out, just the pendulum swinging the other way at the minute.

Also was an item in the Irish Times a while back saying that Asda in Eniskillen is WalMarts 6th best performing store.....in the WORLD!!

Avatar man is Peyton Manning NFL

How fecking dumb are the Irish:blast

Instead of all this queueing all night at shops on the border why not drive another 30-50 miles and go to less crowded shops
