Just got my first new GS last Friday, best thing ever after 9 years of sports bikes.
My only concern is that i know i am going to drop the bike when getting on it or at traffic lights. At 5' 6" and with a 29" inside leg, i am not the tallest of people. my dealer advised me to keep the standard seat because the low seat is the same, just with 20mm of padding removed and as i have got the bike for touring the extra padding will come in handy.
Has anyone got a spare low seat i could try or buy (cheap) just to see if it will save an expensive fall? :beerjug:

P.s. The full Remus exhaust system puts the biggest smile on my face when riding. best £500 i have ever spent.

Hi, I am 5'10 and also have an 29" inside leg. I either get both feet down just past tiptoe, or shuffle my ass cheek across slightly to extend one leg flat on the floor, the side chosen obviously depending on the road camber. I've never had a real problem with it, so perhaps the advice to stick with the more comfy standard seat on its lowest setting is good advice ? On a recent tour I found the seat comfy enough, but I suspect less padding would make it uncomfortable for all-day touring.
I ususally set the rear preload to just below the medium mark to improve handling, resulting in a slight increase in ride height.

I have a 29" inside leg too and find the normal seat ok. I had bought a low seat, which has a different mounting system. Went back to the normal seat tho'. I have now purchased a sargent seat and am presently waiting on it to be delivered. I tried one a few months ago and it appears to be more comfortable - only time(and an excuse to do a couple of hundred miles on the bike :thumb :D ) will tell. They also do a lower version. If you click on the banner top right it will take you to their website :thumb

I've got a low seat you're welcome to try out if you dont mind coming down to London. You can buy it if you like it.

Drop It

As your the same height as me, i can promise you, you will drop it !!!! So what......... :D It's a GS they just bounce back up again, and if you have some crash bars on it and decent aluminium panniers (not the rubbish OE ones) it will be barely on the ground........................in fact good riders can let it fall over and do a donut to bring it up right again :D :D ;) :thumb

SOLUTION

to our shorter than average legs!! something we demi-frogs know a great deal about!! Here it is:
KAHEDO extra low saddle -(20mm lower than B*W's 'low' saddle and heaps more comfortable :thumb

Available from Touratech here
Part number 55-1506 for the rider (front) seat (red piping)
or for the more experienced GS'ers riding yellow 1200's.... :duck: part 055-1516
Buy one- you'll be very glad you did- well, a part of you will be :D

From experience with the 1150, most of the aftermarket low seats that use the stock BMW plastic pan just use less padding and are damned uncomfortable as a result. If the Sargent seat for the 1200 is as good as the 1150 one, that's the way I would go. The Corbin is even comfier, but is wider and makes it harder to reach the ground, even the low version (data from 1150 mind).

From my 1200 test ride the other weekend, I did think that the seat tilted me forward and put more weight on my hands than I was used to, might get used to that. might not.

So for those of you that have bought these aftermarket seats, or tried them, which use the BMW plastic pan (clue - it's got BMW printed on it), and which there own?

I have a low seat that you can try.

Live in Rugby so about 40 miles from you.

I am under 5 foot 6 use 29 inch trousers which sometimes are too long so I am right down there.

I used the low seat for 2 weeks and went back to the standard seat.

Many two up trips, inc the heavily cambered pyrenees roads with no problem.

Damaged my foot last year and so I now need a solution to lower the bike but still don't want a lower seat. Anyway, its not the height of the standard seat it seems to me that it's the front width thats the probelm.

PM me if you want to meet.

Caps..........

my GS came with the low seat, - I think I want the original seat, ( I am 5'11") do you think somebody might want a swapsie??

So, am I correct in thinking that if you have got the BMW low seat on an R1200GS, it would be the same height as a R1200GSA with the KAHEDO extra low saddle? Good news if this is the case :)
