Short term bike insurance for non-UK licence holder

An interesting turn on this. As previously mentioned, my Aussie mate was able to insure his UK registered KTM 690 for 3 months TP only, for about £400.

They quoted him an extra £300 for European (France) cover. But after printing off the the insurance certificate we noticed it already covers the EU plus the usual others, and further research indicates that all UK issued insurance covers the EU.

So that’s £300 saved.

Is the extra £300 they quoted to perhaps extend the cover to Fully Comprehensive, as opposed to just Third Party whilst in the EU? It might be worth asking.

It’s possible, but since the UK cover is TP only, probably not. The bike is only worth £5-6k, and he’s happy with TP so just saving the £300 is a win

Got a new quote again today from Lee at Bikesure and come down from £280 tor 4 days for £195 for 7 days, which was a surprise. We had to wait till 30 days before we need it before we can make payment. Very good service so far.

Interesting. Thanks for posting.

This is an old thread. So things may have changed.
I have contacted bikesure, to see what happens. It's about 40 years since I insured a Motorcycle in the UK. I do have a UK driving licence and finding car insurance when I last bought a car in the uk was not easy. Things change, 30 years ago it was easy. now so much.
Getting added as a named driver on my mums insurance. was no problem cost about 20 quid extra. Having a british divers licence made it easy.
We were quite truthful, I was visiting from Canada while she was in hospital and using her car. Insurance just wanted confirmation and payment from my mum. Not me.
Which is funny. I rent a car they not interested in my old paper British Licence, only my current Canadian License. According to DVLC it is still valid and will be until I turn 70. It did have a provisional MC. Which I think that might have expired several decades ago.
So I expect not having a British motorcycle license will make it more complicated.

You may be able to renew your UK licence online.

Tbh, not having a uk licence does t seem to be much of an issue, it’s not having a UK address that causes problems.

Well I made some enquiries with broker recommended earlier. I was able a get a quote. So it can be done.
My circumstances are obviously unique. So quotes will vary.
On line quotes just didn't work.
Talking to someone live. explaining what my plan was. Postcode address ect. Made a difference. A big question? Address where bike to be kept. Was a garage or No Garage.
Canadian MC licence, no problem, Exiting bike experience ect. UK no claims. No claims bonus. No. Someplace else it might be transferable.
In the end I was quoted something reasonable. Approx. double my, current insurance which has max bonus. So without a UK no claims history, probably not unreasonable. If I had shipped my bike, I would still have had to get short term insurance of some kind anyway.
Compared to the cost of a rental car and insurance not to bad.
Rental bike and insurance is eye-wateringly expensive by comparison.
Still have to decide what I'm going to do. At least I now know, It is possible. As a None Resident. Visiting the UK. Visiting relative. (Not my home address)With a North American License. To By a Bike registered in the UK. To get insurance for a Bike.
The cost? well, not unreasonable. Not cheap. I was looking for full comp. TPF would probably have been quite a bit cheaper. Will probably actual be different depending upon type, age, and value, of bike I find.
The example for quote was My Bike. A 2017 R1200GS. Worth rough guess 10g. For a year. Shorter would be proportional.

To save people trawling through a thread, can you cut to the chase and tell the forum who the broker was and their contact details, please.

Reply, From Manager. Was Yes. Requested my my Phone No, An agent would call me. To many questions and variable for an on line quote.
Had to wait until I arrived in UK.
I can't remember the actual chaps name who called me. He was very nice and helpful.
I do have his name and no, on my phone. To call back when I select a bike. I don't feel comfortable posting a Name and Phone No which is not listed on their public website as contact info.
The generic Co No is 0800 369 8580.
