Hi, just planned a short trip for a couple of week's time, got a few idea's of what to do, here's a map of the trip. It's 4 nights away, camping with the misses. Thus the short mileage, currently. Happy to do upto 150miles in some days, 200 at a push. So some room for rides to decent things.

So far, we're camping:
2 Nights Withernsea,
1 Night Coxwold (Just near thirsk)
1 Night somewhere in the dales?
Things we currently want to go to is:
Spurn Point
Mappleton
Pikering

I was just wondering if anyone could suggest a campsite in the dales, (Hawes not definite yet) or any good things to do/see along route? ~(Cheaper the better, free the best) :augie;

Ta!

Get upto Hawes, Sedburgh and Kirkby Stephen and enjoy some of the best roads.

Let me know when you are about and I live in Ripon maybe we can meet up.

~If your near Thirsk, pop into the town square your in James Herriott country...if your going up near Sutton Bank you can go and see the White Horse, if you walk along the top there is an airfield which launch gliders, so be careful. How about Goathland..where they filmed Heartbeat, the railway station and steam trains are wonderful to see.

Enjoy your trip

From your Avatar detail Im assuming you live in York. In a previous post I thought somebody was a bit ambitious with their daily mileage riding to the far side of Russia, you are more like 60 miles a day.
Still, all day in the saddle is not for ever body, and I have often missed interesting places to visit because I have enjoyed the ride too much to stop.

The ride to Spurn point is not too interesting, try avoid Hull if you can, not easy unless you spend some times with maps or a GPS. On the north of the Humber estuary there is an old Napoleonic fort to visit www.fortpaull.com/
or a bit further towards Spurn Point the British Nuclear defense bunker http://www.rafholmpton.com/ not everybody's type of place but worth visiting. Spurn point is not free and unless you like bird watching I would spend my money on one of the above.

Yorkshire is full of similar sites, but it all depends on your interests and budget. All your shown routes are main roads, you could find much more to see just off these and explore the less busy roads.

If you make it to Hawes there is a very good camp site just outside Gayle. Make sure to visit the cheese factory and try out all the different flavours in the sample room. Its free but if you choose a factory tour it costs.

Whatever you do enjoy it, hope this weather keeps up.

Hi Alex,
Withernsea is a bit of a tired old seaside town now but there are loads of pubs and takeaways so the tourist are well catered for. there is also a tesco and Aldi for the esentials, oh and a petrol station to the south.
follow the coast road down to spurn its narrow and very twisty.

about 5 miles gets you to easington village and then another couple to Kilnsea the last stop before the spun.
small cafe or good pub food at the crown and anchor.
the road from the wildlife trust hut to the life boat station is a couple of miles some of temporary construction road and will be covered in sand some deep enough to be feet down and paddle if your two up so go steady.
at the end is another cafe and the life boat station. worth a walk around to the very end on the beach if the tides out feels like a small island.

if you need anything let me know i live and work in the area.
apart from that i totally agree with the places to see as stated above. But I think whitby is a must.:thumb

Camp at Tan Hill,
Cheers :thumb2 Tan Hill's defo gonna get a visit,

Sssssh.................don't tell them all, I live there:blast

Masham is good too

Anywhere in the Dales or Moors

Hi Agree with the majorbumsore you can do much better than Withensea ,Robin Hoods Bay ,Whitby ,much better stopovers,or carry on up the coast to Saltburn bit of a dump but fantastic beach A171 from Whitby to Guisborough,B1257 Helmsley(worth a wander around) to Stokesley on the moors side are good roads. On the Dales side Garsdale Head ,Tan Hill,Richmond ,Masham all nice places.Try the road fron Hawes( by the cheese factory) to Kettlewell,a true delight.Enjoy.

If you visit Whitby for Fish and Chips I've found the following very good

Sit down restaurant style- Magpie Cafe on Pier Road or Hadleys on Bridge Street corner with Church Street

Takeaway- Mr Chips on Church Street not far from Hadleys, both the above also do good takeaways but are pricier than the norm

Enjoy!:bounce1

Withernsea was £9 for 2 nights with lots of extra's, been a yorkshireman how could I refuse :blast :D Also the fact I have little to no money helps.
Went to Richmond on Bikesafe course, was very nice, probs try and pop up that way again as well as Whitby :thumb2

Think our Choice is Magpie Cafe, heard many a good thing, :drool

Will enjoy, dont you worry!

If you are going up the coast from Scarborough to Whitby try this detour.

Come in-land to East Ayton. Turn off and go north following the river and come to Hackness.

Now for some alps hairpin training :thumb Head to Silpho. Come out into nice cool forest lined roads. Eventually pop out onto the A171 before Whitby.

Yep, if you take Hawes as a a kind of middling point, from the Ingleton or Sedburgh end to Leyburn, lovely run and not too frightening for the 'misses'. At Leyburn you kind of hit the A6108 in the middle, great road (again not too frightening for a pillion), heading Richmond way it's an easy detour to Reeth and Tan Hill (Reeth's my favourite bike stop) :)

Be good if your 4 days can take in the 'west end' as well as the east coast, be a nice round run!

As thebiker said, we're happy to know if you're about, my son's recently started riding pillion on the back of phoo (he's just turned 16), he loves any route, we take it reasonably steady when he's on the back :)

1) buy Body armour.
2) sew your pockets closed
