My 08 GS has done less than 5000 miles and I have noticed a lot a backlash in the drive train. On the centre-stand with the gear in 1st I can rotate the rear wheel back and forth about 2 inches. Is this acceptable play??

Also, when holding the rear wheel at the top and bottom and rocking it there is a perceptible amount of play - very little but you can feel it. Is this okay?? 30k on my 1150 and there was none at all!

I will obviously discuss this with the dealer at the 6k service but want to hear the opinions of other owners.

sounds like your kissing goodbye to the FD:( get it down to the dealers dont wait till the service:thumb2

2" of backlash is about right. The only check you can do on the final drive without taking it to bits is by dropping the drive so you can try and wiggle the input shaft (where the drive shaft plugs in) . If it's got any side to side play in it the bearings are worn.

There's a few posts on here about play in the axle bearings. The BMW limit is, I think, 1mm at the wheel rim. Some people have none, some have a little play even from new.

Get the dealer's assurance it's OK as some final drives have been replaced at very low milages
