Use regular unleaded and the ECU will retard the ignition a bit to overcome any knock and you'll get a bit less power.

The ECU must be responsible for retarding some of the owners then as well

I know better than to believe everything that I read, but the owners manual for the 2013 gs recommends using super unleaded fuel. Do any of you guys believe it will make that much difference? I've had my shiny new gs for a month and it's fantastic. Can't believe moving from the standard stuff will make that much difference.

Check the RON rating, on the continent they have three grades of petrol (91/95/97) whereas we only have two (95/97), their "super-unleaded" 95 grade is comparable with our ordinary "unleaded" 95. Could be when the booklet was translated from the german they took "super-bleifrei" and made it "super-unleaded" not knowing the different RON ratings, here 95 is unleaded and 97 super unleaded, IIRC both should work

I think there is a "translation" problem here.

In Germany, regular fuel is 91 octane, super is 95 octane - so same as UK Regular.
Unlike the 2012 GS/RT, the new LC Boxer does not need Super Plus 98 octane fuel. It is one of the advantages of greatly improved fuel/air mixing thanks to the new cylinder head design.

If it is the new water cooled boxer then it does not have knock sensors and runs on 95RON, if it is a 2013 twin cam then it prefers 98RON but will work fine on 95RON - the manual will tell you

You'll find that in Germany 95 is known as super.

My Mk2 def runs better on 97 RON. 95 feels like the brakes are rubbing so 91 must be as flat as chocolate starfish emissions.

i have always run mine on the 95 ron stuff,the other day i filled it up with the shell optimax ,i dont know what ron the optimax is though,but i can tell the difference ,it pulls better and ticks over smoother without dought.

Optimax was 98 RON.

The current V-Power is 99 RON.

When I had my RT serviced at Motoscot a while ago Steve asked what fuel I ran. He has seen damage to valve stems on some engines that have been run on 95, and advised to go to 98. Now he`s been striping boxer motors for many a year so I bow to his expertise and consequently I run my new GS on 98.
the additional cost is hardly worth worrying over imo.
