Going off on a 1800 mile tour of Spain/France pyrenees on Friday third June. My tourance on the rear is at 2.7mm.

Never had a GS on tour before so you experienced folks will know what I am getting at here.

We have 280 motorway miles to portsmouth. then its mainly twisties and A roads for a week, then the 280 back again from portsmouth

Will it see the trip out or should I change it before I go? I will be solo but full luggage much of the time riding in a group at about 80 MPH on the motorways.

Thanks for your views

Al.

If in Doubt change it cost of peace of mind is priceless

That's very sensible and I may well do that, I am curious about the wear rate as only had the bike a few weeks and the tyre was on it when I bought it.

2.7 should see you through but I too would recommend changing, towards the end of the trip if you hit rain it will play on your mind, not worth the drama mate.

Change it, keep the present one in your garage and use it when new one runs out, only 15 quid to fit so worth the bother for sure.

Bon voyage :)

Again, very sensible, I am decided, its a new tyre.

I will have a look for a decent price and get it changed tomorrow

Cheers

The current tyre would possibly last the trip,BUT,you may not make it last, it'll be more susceptible to punctures on low tread, and if you get rain later in the trip it'll be horrible to ride.I'd put on a new one, keep the old one for when it wears out and get your full money's worth out it at a leter date. I change my car tyres at 3mm, and allow my bike tyres to get to 2.5mm before I change. With tourances they look as if there is loads of tread on the outer edges, but look at the centre line and you'll have naff all.Don't take the chance, you'll feel more confident with a fresh tyre.:thumb2

I honestly wouldn't bother unless you reckon you are going to eat through 1.7mm on the trip. Tourances square off a bit as they wear but its gradual and hence feels normal just as putting new unsquared tyres on feels strange when you replace the worn ones.
Bike tyres unlike car tyres have a small contact patch and plenty of weight ( add a tosser and camping kit to that ) and they are fairly efficient at squishing rainwater out of the way ( not far for it to travel from the centre of the treadface to the edge ).

If its a peace of mind thing - so be it, but unless you are really heavy with the throttle / brakes etc I doubt that there is really an issue.

Legally you have to change at under 1mm in the UK, I doubt the law has been set at that depth on the basis it is marginal as to being safe or not.

I think we should be asking the original poster what mileage he gets. New bike or not he'll have some idea whether he gets 1000 or 10000 out of a tire.

Mine last 4000 so I wouldn't dream of heading out with a half worn tire. I always start my annual trip with a new pair - remember you can keep your part worn tire and fit it again later on to use whats left of the tread.

If you don't change, you'll get, maybe, £10 more value from your tyre.
It'll detract from your enjoyment of your holiday and as a percentage of the total annual cost of owning the bike, it's a pittance.
Change and enjoy. :thumb2

Change it and flog the other one as a part worn on flea bay........... someone will buy it :D

If they are the 'old' Tourance then you might get away with it but personally I wouldn't do it if only for peace of mind. If they are EXP's then that would be a different matter as I am alarmed at how quickly my rear is wearing down.
Initially I thought it was just normal wear of the first couple of mm but it is still going down and at this rate I doubt I will get much over 2-2.5K out of it which is half what the Michelin's, Avon's & 'normal' Tourance fitted before have done. That said, they suite the bike very well and the grip is great so I suppose there has to be a trade-off somewhere but I will be looking at fitting the 'old' Tourance next time as they were ok.

you should get away with it, it might be worth spending a hour or two on esearch about getting tyres out there just incase:thumb

Thats a good call, I can't get one fitted today as couldn't make arrangements yesterday with everyone being on holiday:eek:

So If i cant get one before I go I am sure they have bike tyres in Spain and France.

Will check it out.

Its the old tourance

Do you really want to waste time on you trip worrying about tyres, hiding somewhere to get a new one fitted, losing half a day in a tyre shop?
Been there done that with mates bikes on trips... trips are for fun and riding... make sure the bike is ready for such.

you've got 1.1 mm to do 1800 miles, fancy chatting to a Spanish or French cop about your tightass decision not to change tyres if you end up below the limit ;-)

Hey Liquid, I can did it man. The limit is 1mm though so got 1.6 to go
Dead right about changing it mate and wasting time.

Not tightass, just short of time this week. I will ring round today and see if I can get one done. If I can then I will have a tyre with 2.7mm for sale here later today.

The legal limit in the uk is 1mm. Is it the same in Europe? I know car tyre limits are different. Change it for peace of mind.

I'd change it.
Peace of mind, less chance of punctures and a whole lot nicer riding on a non-squared tyre.

Thanks to all who advised, new one fitted today at woosters for £114.00

My old one is available free to whoever claims it, see my post in for sale section
Wheel not included of course
Cheers
