Should I keep it???

I picked up my 06 17k mile 1200GS on the 26th Mar, rode 90 miles home and everything was great... On Fri 27th I travelled about 8 miles before the engine died, which I think is the fuel relay 'well documented' issue?? There was no fuel pump noise and the bike appeared to be out of petrol, but wasn't.
There were no warning lights of any sort, just no engine power, but all the electrics were working normally.. It was extremely scary as I had just decided not to overtake a slow lorry as this problem happened; had I gone for the overtake it could have been disastrous!! It was bad enough trying to stop the bike with no brakes, but I did manage it...

Question is, should I(or am I entitled) to get my money back. It appears that there is not a permanent fix for this 'fuel relay issue' and the same prob could happen at any time. I have lost confidence in the bike after this incident. I can not stress strongly enough that it could have been catastrophic had I gone for the perfectly safe(under normal conditions) overtaking maneuver...

The bike was purchased from a main dealer and has 1 year BMW warranty cover.

Theoretically, under the principal of something being 'unfit for purpose' you could reject the bike and get your dosh back. In practice, you'd almost certainly have to give the dealer at least a chance to put it right. Why don't you do that anyway? I understand the incident must have shaken your confidence (had something similar with a VW Passat Tdi POS a few years ago) but I don't think you are certain what has caused the problem. It's such a great bike that it would be a shame to completely write it off.

Up to you, it's your bike, but that's my tuppence worth.

jons right give them the chance to rectify the problem,once this is solved you will love the GS more that you did your 850

Some fail, some don't. I've followed the threads on the FPC failures, and only last week decided to take mine out and have a look at it, the bike is coming up to 5 years old. I can't post pictures, but trust me when i say it looked 'as new'. There is a preformed seal that, on assembly can distort and let moisture in, i know this because it happened when i refitted it!, in hindsight, maybe when the failures first started, had everyone removed and re-sealed the unit, then fewer may have failed. Get it fixed under warranty, and enjoy what a fantastic bike it is.

Thanks for your responses.. As you can imagine I am gutted...but it has not been officially diagnosed by the dealer yet, but I am sure it is the FPC issue....
I want to give the bike a chance and hopefully i will get it back on Tues??

Did I read somewhere that it is a good idea to use a silicon sealer around the offending part?

Why aren't BMW doing anything about it? are they waiting for someone to be hurt, or worse?

Take a spare one with you once its sorted, or look for the fix on another thread on UKGSer... and don't worry too much ... enjoy your new bike

I have had my 54 plate (05 bike) from new. Now with 48'600 miles on it and no issues with any of the problems so offten debated on these pages.

Keep it, you will not be disapointed.

Tell the dealer you have no confidence in it and want to give it back, BMW will try to persuade you to keep it - you should get some goodwill.

I bought the wife a new VW polo and the gearbox failed with 21 miles on the clock, new car supplied - 2 years free servicing and a private plate.

Shit happens and you will enjoy the bike but your experience has been tarnished by this issue so make sure you get some compo from BM.

I really want to keep it, especially as I have already spent money on goodies for it!
I am planning to put my 'issue' on record with BMW UK and see what happens....just in case I have bought a Fri pm bike! I will be beating the dealer up tomorrow..
I don't mind mechanical things breaking down occasionally, I even expect it, but this problem is bloody scary when it leaves you with almost no brakes!!

A fault present at the time of purchase. Examples are:
• an error in design so that a product is manufactured incorrectly
• an error in manufacturing where a faulty component was inserted.
The "fault" may not become apparent immediately but it was there at the time of sale and so the product was not of satisfactory standard.

sometimes peoples attitudes amaze me,
yes you bought a from a dealer and paid a bit of a premium for the back up you will receive,instead of reaching for the law books go back to your dealer explain calmly and reasonably what has happened,it will no doubt be sorted and your dealer will now know you to are a resonable person to deal with which will stand you in good sted later.

the bike is a machine which if used may go wrong it might not dont worry about it just enjoy they are brill bikes,no better allrounder in my opinion,

The dealer was very accommodating so I want to give them a chance to fix it, which I know they will...

I would try to push for a further year warrenty.
Wait till you get your bike back and on the next wet miserable windy day go and find some nice, wet,muddy,puddely,very minor back roads,ride around for a couple of hours,come home,hose the bike off,jump in the bath,open a bottle of wine sit back reflect on your day and if you don't think your GS is the best bike you've ever owned then my names not Wrinkley.
