Every bloody year his happens. Same unit same laptop same cables.
My unit is not detected.
Every year, fiddle about with so many things and settings, I forget which finally gets it on.

This year its not even bingbonging. Tried 6 different usb leads, cleaned connections. Still no worky.

Dont know why im even typing this. Ive searched all the threads and tried everything.

This thing fuckin pisses me off every time I go to use the damn thing.

And the wifes kindle is fecked again !!!

I thought the tech world was geing better. Its feckin shit.

Stay calm Den ..... Chant 'real books and maps ... real books and maps ... real books and maps'

The thing is , I like the satnav. I spent months planning routes so I can just sit there and go where Ive told it to send me. I dont want to go back to sitting at the side of the road with a map about the same feckin size as the country I'm in.

And NO .. I'm not just going to buy the latest super fandango fekin zuquesttomtomnavman shit, because a year down the line that will be fucked as well ... jus after Ive learned to use it. The one Ive got is working. Its just not talking to the bloody computer !!!

Its turned into a rant , hasnt it. Sorry, I knew that would happen.

A 2650...? That's the one with dead reckoning isn't it? Oi reckons its day of reckoning must have come. Time to buy a Zumo.....:augie

2 choices, try deleting all the usb instances in device manager and let it refind them-this may work but more likely is the need to download usb drivers from garmin to let it recognise the new unit

Update and a question.

Still no joy. Tried downloading more new drivers. Ive now got more drivers than Eddie Stobart. Tried the plugin thing, managed to log into my garmin account but they are about as useful as sun tan cream in britain.
Sent them a message but not expecting anything.

Question . Ive managed to copy the map set required onto the CF card using a reader wot I found on another computer.(had to install mapsource in that one before I could do that).
I believe the maps are held in the card and the routes are in the unit itself, so If this is the case, I presume the route I just sent to the card hasnt went anywhere. It said 'tranferred successfully', but I cant find it when CF is in the sat nav.

Schtum, 'buy a zumo' !feckckaff. My 2650 is only 5 years old. I suppose thats the equivalent to 55 years old in the computing world.

More obsolete than a very obsolete thing......:rob

I'm intrigued as to how and why you ended up with a 2650 though. It's just a 2610 with the dead reckoning feature, isn't it...? :nenau

BTW which maps have you got it in?

Try using the USB lead that was supplied with your Garmin - not the Mickey Mouse one you bought off eBay!

Update

According to device manager, all the latest drivers are installed and working properly.
A screen came up after a check which mentioned code 10 fault.
Here are the results of checks. Dont know what the hell I'm doing, but all I want to know is ... the gps faulty or can there be a driver fault even though it says its ok. Feck knows!! Googling just confuses everything.

I can get another unit cheaply enough but I dont want to if I dont have to.

1) With Garmin plugged in, go to control panel>system>device manager and uninstall anything that says garmin, or any USB thingies that have a likkle yellow warning triangle next to them.

2) unplug garmin
3) uninstall mapsource and any garmin products (after backing up your data :blast)
4) Reboot PC
5) install mapsource FRESH
6) plug garmin into a DIFFERENT Usb slot....listen for the bing bong.

7) open a beer and chill :thumb2

Are you on Windows 7?? Most older garmin drivers stop working post XP

worked last year on windows 7 on same laptop etc.

I had exactly the same problem with my 2610. Tried everything, including all the above suggestions with no success. The computer just will not recognise it. Tried it on other computers too but with no difference.

I bought a CF card reader. I can transfer all my maps and routes to the card using that instead of plugging the unit in. Result:thumb2

These people may be able to repair it for you. You can get a free estimate:-

Ive got a card reader. I transferred the mapset onto the cf card, but I dont think routes can be done this way.

AberAngus ...... Ive tried 6 usb cables and the only ports I havnt tried poking:beerjug: them in belong to the wife.

Stubbornness is a bit of curse sometimes.

does the 2650 show a power/charging symbol while connected to a USB port ?

If its meant to and it isn't you may have a burnt out USB port,

I've repaired a few of the older Quests that had this issue, it was the tracks from the USB socket had burnt away, I just relaid some fresh wire and soldered over it and voila a working Quest again.
