Hi there,
I bought a 2005 R1200 gs recently but am experiencing a bit of pain in both shoulders and slight discomfort / tingling in my left hand. I think it's because the handlebars are wide and quite low. Anyone got any ideas? Will a simple handlebar riser set fix the problem?
thanks,
FTH

Welcome.

It's fairly bad form to jump straight in without introducing yourself.

Why not drop in to the "I'm new here" section?

Several bod have complained about assorted pains from cramp, sore arses, noise, right thro' to buffeting.

Many swear by bar risers as a solution to one of these problems.

Give them a try, it won't break the bike.

You can also rotate the bars a bit in their clamps.

I use risers just because of this as i suffer from cervical spongilightsmakes a lot of difference.
cheers Bobbyc

Which risers do you use Bobby? I have the same problem and I'm convinced it's a bar reach problem, even with them rotated back. This is on my 05 R1200GS.

Looking at both Nippys and also Jaws. Big difference in reach though - Nippys move them back 40mm whereas the Jaws only 15mm. Not sure which to go for really, especially as there's a huge difference in price.

Thare are alternatives ...

... to fixed risers ! Try a search for Rox Risers and see what I mean; I've a pair on my 1150GSA for just this reason (shoulder pain) and once adjusted to the 'sweet spot' all discomfort has gone away :thumb2

Roll the bars one way or t'other, keep a light grip on the bars at all times.

The 1200's can be a bit vibey at times especially when new or in need of a service, these vibes can cause all sorts of weird issues in the riders upper body.

Look good to me but I can't find a UK reseller for these. Where did you get yours from?

Touratech do em as well, fairly cheap but look good ,have em on mine.

I don't think the TT ones are adjustable like the ROX ones though are they? They don't look to bring the bars back either, just raise them up and to be honest there are much cheaper ones that do just that, like the Jaws ones.

I was lucky ...

... and got mine 'as new' from someone on here ! Buying from the US isn't a drama, but Parcel Farce often manage to cock it up

You don't find the relative lack of reach adjustment a problem compared to the others then Ash? 15mm back doesn't sound like a lot that's all, especially compared to the 40mm that the NN ones offer?

had them on the 1150 for 12 months :thumb
and got a set awaiting the arrival of the 1200.
and at £22.00 delivered you can easily sell on if the fix dosen't work.
and after 9 operations on a u/s shoulder i am the king of shoulder pain.
:tears :tears ;)

Posture!!

I suspect you're correct. Poor core strength leads to poor posture when fatigued, which can result in shoulder pain (typical runners complaint).

Try a course of Pilates.

I'll give those a shot then. As you say, cheap enough to try them and I'd rather shell out £22 and find they work or don't work than the best part of £70 to find out the same!

Just spoken to John at Jaws and he tells me I'm the first ever customer to request black ones! Obviously it doesn't bother any other GSer having silver risers on black clamps?!

Going to order them now anyway and they'll be here for tomorrow :thumb2

Had the same problem with my 2005 GS - Migsel risers sorted it - think they were 25mm ...
